10 Things Every Southerner Should Know Before Their First Trip To Whataburger

Here in the South, we’re blessed with a multitude of fast food restaurants that originated in our region and therefore know exactly how to win over a Southerner’s heart. Whether it’s the beloved chicken sandwiches and sorely missed slaw at Chick-fil-a or the excellent biscuits at Bojangles, we’re absolutely spoiled rotten with options for a great, on-the-go meal.

One of our favorite spots is Whataburger, a burger chain that got its start in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950 and has expanded to more than 1,000 locations across 16 states in the 75 years since. With more than 750 locations in Texas alone, plus more across the South in states like Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Tennessee, it’s easy to get your Whataburger fix no matter where in the South you’re located. If you’re a Whataburger novice, here are 10 tips to keep in mind before making a pilgrimage.

Mustard Is The Only Default Condiment For Burgers

If you’re used to the trio of ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard served standard on a burger, don’t expect the same from Whataburger. The restaurant only tops burgers with mustard (mayonnaise and ketchup are available upon request), so be sure to specify if you aren’t a fan of the spread or want to add other condiments.

Breakfast Is Served From 11 p.m. To 11 a.m.

It’s not just lunch and dinner that Whataburger is known for. The restaurant also has quite the following for its breakfast offerings. Just don’t expect to get them all day. While lunch and dinner can be ordered at any hour, breakfast is only offered from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m.

The Breakfast Burger Is A Sleeper Hit

If you wake up craving brunch or just a heartier breakfast, look no further than the Breakfast Burger. The breakfast sandwich-burger mashup combines the best of both classic dishes, featuring a small hamburger patty, an egg, hashbrown sticks, American cheese, bacon, and Creamy Pepper sauce.

The one thing most people will tell you that you must try at Whataburger is the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit, also known as an HBCB. The favorite dish for late-night diners and early-morning risers has three simple components: a buttermilk biscuit, a crispy chicken strip, and honey butter. The honey butter is the operative ingredient, so pros know to always ask for an extra slather—there’s no extra charge and it makes your biscuit that much better.

There Are Two Types Of Ketchup

No, we’re not talking about two brands. Whataburger makes not one but two varieties of ketchup in house. You can ask for as much of their signature Fancy Ketchup and Spicy Ketchup as you want. They’re excellent with most things on the menu—especially the restaurant’s thin-cut, crispy fries.

Green Chiles Are A Great Addition

In true Texas fashion, you can request to add green chiles to your burger for a little kick. You can also add some spice to your meal by adding pickled jalapenos, grilled jalapenos, or Creamy Pepper sauce to your sandwich.

Dr Pepper Is The Drink Of Choice

For the true Whataburger experience, the only drink to pair your meal with is Dr Pepper. A fellow Texas creation, the zingy soft drink is the preferred beverage for Whataburger purists. And if you see the limited-time Dr Pepper milkshake on the menu, you’re obligated to order it.

At Whataburger the option for Texas toast always exists. Some sandwiches, like the favorite Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich and classic Patty Melt come on the bread automatically, but you can also choose to sub buns on any other sandwich for buttery toast instead.

 Most Locations Are Open 24/7

Fast food is all about convenience, and nothing says convenient like being open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When Whataburger first opened in 1950, its always-open status was a big draw, and the company continues that tradition today by keeping most of their locations open 24/7.

Ketchup and mustard are far from the only condiment options at Whataburger. Other hits include Honey BBQ, Jalapeno Ranch, Creamy Pepper, Honey Mustard, Patty Melt Sauce, and Buffalo Sauce. Request what you want while you’re at the restaurant, but also be on the lookout for the bottled versions at your local grocery store. H-E-B has been to known to carry most of the restaurant’s collection.
