10 Ways to Style Fisherman Sandals, the Warm-Weather Staple on Trend for 2025

With sandal season right around the corner, it’s time to start making wardrobe plans for your 2025 spring and summer shoe game. Last year it was all about embellished toe-ring sandals, but the year before that—thong sandals reigned supreme. Footwear trends come and go, but certain shoes, like fisherman sandals, have proven to withstand the test of time.

Dating back centuries, fisherman sandals were first worn by, well, fishermen. But if you look back at old family photos, you might even stumble upon a memory of you and your bothers rocking the gender-neutral style in the ’90s. Known for their signature woven design, fisherman sandals allow water to drain through them making them a practical nautical option. And with nautical styles, like boat shoes, becoming popular again, it makes total sense that we’re seeing the fisherman style pop back up, too.

“Over the last few seasons, we have seen a rise in nautical-inspired style starting with the Miu Miu spring/summer 2024 runway show, and the fisherman sandal is the consummate nautical shoe,” says stylist, Arielle Siboni. The runways also featured woven fisherman sandals for spring/summer 2024 from brands like Loewe. Michael Kors also doubled down on the style, showing pointed fisherman sandals in his spring/summer 2025 collection.

Contrary to what you may have thought, fisherman sandals aren’t only for bathing suits and vacationwear. Michael Kors showed that they can be styled with suiting and Loewe showcased them with a leather midi skirt. “I think fisherman sandals are inherently casual, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be paired back to a summer dress or a tailored pair of shorts,” says Siboni.

If you’re looking for more ways to incorporate fisherman sandals into your spring/summer 2025 wardrobe, below are 10 outfit ideas to wear the stylish shoe.

With Long Shorts

Long shorts are having a moment this year so it’s only fitting that we style them with their equally trendy counterpart: fisherman sandals. Chunkier shoes, like loafers or sneakers, might appear too bulky when paired with denim long shorts. That’s why we think fisherman sandals are the perfect match for all of your long shorts needs.

If you’re ever in doubt about what to wear, invest in a tailored suit that always makes you feel your best. Not only will it flatter you in every way, but you can dress the look up or down depending on your footwear choice. So yes, this means you can wear a full suit with fisherman sandals for a laid-back and more casual effect.

With a Bubble Skirt

Shiboni says that fisherman sandals are casual, gender-neutral shoes, which she loves pairing with “more feminine styles for an unexpected twist.” A bubble skirt would be an example of exactly what Siboni’s talking about. Leaning into more feminine styles like a mini skirt softens the overall look of woven sandals.

With a Trench Coat

Fisherman sandals, like this white leather pair, go seamlessly with a more minimalist wardrobe too. You can wear them with trousers, a classic white tank, and your go-to trench coat for a sleek look. When asked for her favorite fisherman sandal brands, Siboni mentioned the Olsen-founded label, The Row.

With a Printed Dress

Animal prints, like leopard and zebra, have been everywhere lately. So it only makes sense to wear a fun and colorful zebra midi dress with a pair of lug-soled fisherman sandals, of course. This kind of pairing would be great for a daytime event or just a good time with friends.

With Socks and Knits

If knit shorts aren’t on your spring wishlist, you better pay close attention to this Scandi style. Get this cozy and comfortable spring ensemble with an oversized sweater and crossbody basket weave bag. You might even be mistaken for a Scandinavian (in the best way possible).

With a Dress

I know what you’re probably thinking: there’s no way to make fisherman sandals work with a dress meant for nighttime. But you should seriously guess again because if you find a pair of daintier-looking fisherman sandals and pair them with sheer tights, you might as well consider yourself ready for your next cocktail event. With a look this chic, everyone will be wondering where you got your sandals from.

With a Button Down and Skirt

Crisp blue button-downs are probably all over your Instagram feed right now, and for good reason. They’re a classic style and sky blue are just the right mix of color and aesthetic for this time of year. So if you’re trying to figure out what to wear with your button-down, you might consider a black midi skirt and white buckled fisherman sandals. Together, they add an unexpected element to the classic blue button-down.

As if we haven’t spoken about the cherry red craze enough, now you can think about getting a pair of the season’s coolest sandals in the viral hue. Think about wearing them with something else that pops too, like an argyle printed sweater for a distinct personal style.

If you’re looking to achieve an upscale designer look, wear black chunky-soled Prada-inspired fisherman sandals. A light and airy black and white outfit is perfect for warmer days walking around a big city. Oh, and your feet will be sure to thank you for not getting too hot with the sandal’s natural ventilation.
