This Is the $8 Hyaluronic Acid Serum That Dermatologists Recommend
CeraVe offers some of my favorite products for sensitive skin, and this hyaluronic acid serum is no exception. It has a creamy, satiny feel, which sinks in like a lightweight moisturizer. My skin appears noticeably smoother after I use it, too—it’s like applying a blurring primer that also happens to be good for your skin. In addition to hyaluronic acid, this formula contains ceramides to help support and maintain the skin’s moisture barrier and lock in moisture, Dr. Garshick notes. To further soothe sensitive skin, the serum is fragrance-free, oil-free, and non-comedogenic, meaning it also won’t clog pores. I experienced zero irritation or redness when using this serum and appreciate that I can order it from Amazon or pick it up from any drugstore.
7. Best Hyaluronic Acid Serum for Mature Skin: PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum

- What we like: Long-lasting hydration and an advanced formula that penetrates multiple layers of skin
- What could be improved: Price, strong rosemary scent
“Helping to deliver both immediate and long-term hydration, this serum also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” says Dr. Garshick. “It is great for mature skin as it helps to plump the skin, improve fine lines, and is easy to use.” This serum utilizes three types of hyaluronic acid with different molecular weights. The different weights of hyaluronic acid are able to penetrate different layers of the skin, which results in longer-lasting hydration and a plumper, smoother texture.
This formula has a plush, gel-like texture that makes my skin visibly more glowy and hydrated right away. It feels like a lightweight, protective balm once it sinks in, which may be especially beneficial for mature skin types that are also dealing with dryness.
8. Best Korean Hyaluronic Acid Serum: COSRX Hyaluronic Acid 3 Serum

- What we like: The formula provided the most immediate and noticeable glow out of the serums on this list
- What could be improved: Small size, slightly tacky feel
This serum brings together hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and an amino acid complex for a protected moisture barrier and skin that’s visibly plumper and more hydrated. Dr. Garshick notes that this combination of ingredients makes it especially great for dry and sensitive skin types, which explains why I became such a fan of the formula. It has a plush, gel-like texture that gave my skin the most noticeable glow out of all of the serums upon application. I noticed a boost in plumpness too, especially in my very dry cheek and eye area. While aesthetics aren’t the most important factor in grading a serum, I have to add that this has my favorite packaging of the bunch—the dark, hefty glass bottle makes the product look and feel more expensive than it really is. I only wish the formula had less of a tacky feel, but that went away as my moisturizer dried on top of it.
9. Best Hyaluronic Acid Serum with Vitamin C: TruSkin Vitamin C Serum

- What we like: Gentle enough for all skin types and combines two skincare steps in one product
- What could be improved: Slightly sticky, but dries down fast
Dr. Garshick recommends this serum “because it combines the brightening and antioxidant benefits of vitamin C with the hydrating properties of hyaluronic acid, making it ideal for improving skin texture, tone, and overall radiance.” It contains an especially gentle form of vitamin C called sodium ascorbyl phosphate that brightens and adds radiance without irritating sensitive skin types. In addition to hyaluronic acid and vitamin C, this serum contains vitamin E, another free radical-fighting antioxidant that softens and smoothes skin.
I was especially excited to try this option, as many vitamin C serums have proven too harsh for my skin. This one did not cause any irritation and has since become a staple in my morning routine. I love that it streamlines my skincare by combining antioxidants and hyaluronic acid in one step, and I’ve noticed my skin looking glowier and more even as I continue to apply it. Thanks to its lightweight feel and gentle formula, I can see this working across all skin types.
10. Best Hyaluronic Acid Serum for Under Makeup: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

- What we like: Only $10 and so lightweight, it feels like nothing
- What could be improved: Not as hydrating as some of the other serums on this list
When it comes to finding the best hyaluronic acid serum to wear under makeup, celebrity makeup artist Kasey Spickard says to look for “a non-sticky, lightweight formula.” “The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid is a low-cost option that does a great job,” he says. “It performs well under makeup because it’s a super lightweight, water-based formula that absorbs quickly into the skin without causing pilling or separation of the makeup. It rapidly plumps, smoothes, and pulls moisture deep into the skin.” On my first day trialing this serum, I wore it under my base makeup for a photo shoot, which I knew was risky. Luckily, the risk paid off—my foundation, concealer, and the rest of my base routine glided on smoothly, and I didn’t notice any pilling or breaking up of my makeup throughout the day. Since then, I’ve tested this under a variety of other base products, including skin tints and a simple spot-concealing routine, with equally successful results. As Spickard noted, this serum has a silky, lightweight consistency that I can hardly feel upon application. Despite its barely-there feeling, I was pleasantly surprised by the noticeable glow the serum gave my skin.
