In India, several animals are worshipped, and snakes are one of them. People worship snakes on Nag Panchami. Most people become alert as soon as they see a snake, and many are afraid of them. However, it is important to know that snakes fear humans just as much as we fear them.
It is said that snakes do not harm anyone unless they feel threatened, in which case they may bite to protect themselves. This makes them potentially dangerous. However, there are a few items in your kitchen that snakes tend to avoid due to their strong scent.
Dr Anil Kumar, an expert from the Department of Zoology, stated that only 20 per cent of snakes found in India are venomous. “Snakes do not attack humans intentionally; they only bite in self-defence when they feel threatened,” he said.
Snakes are highly sensitive to strong odours. If a snake enters your home, you can sprinkle phenyl, vinegar, or kerosene in the area. Similarly, the smell of garlic, lemon, cinnamon, or mint can drive them away. Snakes are also affected by temperature changes, which is why smoke is often used to chase them out of hiding places.
Dr Kumar advises that if a snake enters your house, it is best to leave it alone and contact a professional snake catcher.
Snakes do not have ears, but they are highly sensitive to vibrations and loud sounds. Due to their physical structure, they detect sound through vibrations, which helps them escape predators.
