Looking for a New Hobby? Try These 6 Trending Crafts for 2025

From creative DIY projects and junk journaling to knitting and crocheting, arts and crafts projects are a great way to keep busy. According to Michaels, people are turning to crafting for connection, mental wellness, and self-expression more than ever. In celebration of National Craft Month, the retailer unveiled its first-ever Creativity Trend Report, detailing the crafting trends set to define the year ahead.

“Crafting is no longer just a hobby—it’s self-care, a way to connect with friends, personalize your space, and even save money,” Mandi Clark, Director of Trend & Design at Michaels says in the report. “People are also embracing creativity beyond traditional crafting—turning hosting, gifting, and decorating into creative outlets. From curating tablescapes and balloon arches to making gift wrap as thoughtful as the gift itself, more people are infusing creativity into everyday moments.”

Ahead, we’re sharing the six crafting trends the retailer expects to take shape in 2025.

Gateway Crafts

Creativity is more approachable than ever, thanks to beginner-friendly DIY kits and viral TikTok crafts. These “gateway” crafts are perfect for individuals interested in testing a new hobby or looking to find their crafting niche. What’s more, these types of crafts often offer step-by-step instructions and guide you along as you master a new skill. These types of projects are “turning more people into lifelong creators,” the report says.

Emotional Support Crafts

Crafts have always offered a way to unwind and relieve stress, and this isn’t changing in 2025. Emotional support crafts, like knitting and embroidery, will continue to be popular amongst crafters this year to help people cope with stress and anxiety.

Social Crafting

According to the report, social crafting is becoming more popular as people seek meaningful ways to connect. “Social circles that once revolved around dinner reservations and happy hours are now centered around aesthetic craft parties, weekend crafternoons, and tackling viral TikTok DIYs together,” the retailer explains.

Handmade Gifts

Personalized and handmade gifts are all the rage right now, causing people to ditch generic and mass-produced ones. This makes gifting presents more meaningful and personal. Plus, they tell a story and can foster deeper connections with others.

Miniatures

Escaping into other worlds through books, movies, and games isn’t new, but this concept is currently taking over the crafting world. From book nooks and dollhouses to hyper-detailed dioramas, crafting with miniatures is a major trend, allowing people to create their own small world to enjoy.

Dupe Décor

More people are channeling their creativity with DIY projects to recreate high-end home décor on a budget. Inspired by TikTok’s “dupe” culture, this crafting trend allows you to put a personalized spin on trendy décor so it will stand the test of time.
