Aubrey Plaza and her husband Jeff Baena were estranged before his death on January 3, a medical examiner’s report has confirmed. According to People, who reviewed the document, the couple decided to separate four months before he died by suicide at age 47. 

Plaza and Baena had reportedly been “experiencing recent marital difficulties” before their decision to separate in September 2024, per the document from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner. The report also reveals that after Baena made “concerning remarks” to Plaza a month later in October, in response, the White Lotus actress decided “to call a friend to perform a welfare check on her husband.” The Life After Beth director reportedly started going to therapy afterwards.

The medical examiner’s report said that Plaza received her last text message from her estranged husband on January 3, the day of his death, at 10:36 in the morning. A dogwalker found Baena’s body when they walked into his home. Per an earlier report by TMZ, he was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Following the news of Baena’s suicide, Plaza pulled out of her presenting appearance at the 2025 Golden Globes on January 5. The Parks and Recreation alum–who started dating Baena in 2011 and confirmed that they were married in 2021–shared a joint statement with Baena’s family a day later.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time,” she shared in a statement to People.
