Reece James celebrated his first England start since September 2022 with a spectacular free-kick, handing Thomas Tuchel’s side a 1-0 lead against Latvia at Wembley.

James, who has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, showcased his technique by curling a precise effort over the defensive wall from 25 yards out in the 37th minute. The strike left Latvia goalkeeper Krisjanis Zviedris with no chance and was reminiscent of England greats known for their set-piece prowess.

This was James’ first goal for England in his 18th cap.

The goal came in a match where England dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a deep-lying Latvian defence. Latvia, ranked 140th in the world, frustrated the hosts for much of the first half before James’ moment of brilliance provided the breakthrough.

Morgan Rogers, making his England debut, nearly doubled the lead in added time, but Zviedris produced a reflex save to keep the score at 1-0 going into the break.

England manager Tuchel, in only his second game in charge, showed visible relief as his side finally broke down Latvia’s defensive structure.
