It’s unclear what year National Flower Day started, but it’s now celebrated on March 21 to kick off the spring season. Additionally, we have a National Flower (rose) and State Flowers (New York’s: also rose), but which flower is actually the most beloved? 

The team at data insight company YDAFT, which specializes in “fun content,” analyzed recent Google Trends data from all over the U.S. and came up with the most popular flowers from every state. There are classics like roses and hydrangeas, of course, but here are the other types making their way from screens to gardens this year. 

Most Popular Flowers by State

To come up with the most popular flowers, YDAFT first complied a list of the 85 most common flower types. Then, they evaluated how often each bloom showed up in searches in each state. These four appeared the most. 

Roses

Let’s get this one out of the way—roses are the most popular flower in the country, ranking first in these eight states: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, and New York. This isn’t a surprise, and we welcome any type of rose come spring. (It’s the most purchased flower, too, according to the report.)

Marigold

Next up is the orange and yellow (sometimes annual, sometimes perennial) marigold. These ranked as the top bloom in five states: Colorado, Delaware, Kansas, Missouri, and Wisconsin. As people start planning their garden beds and companion plants, it’s not unusual that marigolds kept popping up. These blooms are a pest’s worst nightmare.

Hydrangea

If you don’t love hydrangeas, perhaps you just don’t love flowers—or maybe their finicky nature deters you. The iconic bloom wasn’t far behind marigold—it was the top flower in Alabama, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Rhode Island.

Sunflower

Sunflowers are generally considered a late-summer, early-fall bloom, so it’s interesting that it’s a favorite this time of year for residents of Kentucky, New Mexico, and North Dakota. Regardless, sunflowers thrive in these areas in part due to the long, sunny days and wide open fields.

Favorite Flowers Off the Beaten Path

The data show 88% of Americans feel happier after purchasing flowers, but clearly not everyone is rushing out to buy just roses. Some states stood out for their flower preferences and the reasoning could be multifaceted—like zoning, season, or even cultural differences. 

Tulips

Both Texas and Oklahoma love tulips, but keep in mind that this data is from the last three months only. The popularity could be due to it being prime planting season for those who want last-minute spring color. 

Snapdragon

Idaho and Wyoming preferred snapdragons, which is notable given these states share a border. Again, snapdragons are early bloomers, thriving in the early spring, so it makes sense that searches are up. 

Exotic Orchid

If you had to guess one state that would name the exotic orchid their favorite, which would it be? If you went with Hawaii, you’re right on target. But you don’t need to live in the tropics to enjoy the plant: Just pick an orchid that’s easy to grow.
