Aryna Sabalenka sweeps Paolini aside, targets Miami Open title against Pegula | The Express Tribune
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka stormed into her first Miami Open final with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory over Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.
The Belarusian needed just 71 minutes to dismantle the sixth seed, extending her dominant run in the tournament without dropping a set.
Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, will now face Jessica Pegula in Saturday’s final. Pegula defeated Alexandra Eala in the second semi-final.
The win also marks her second straight final appearance after falling to Mirra Andreeva at Indian Wells earlier this month.
“I’m super happy with the level I played today. Of course, super happy to be in my first Miami Open final,” Sabalenka said.
She was in control from start to finish, never trailing at any point in the match. The score was tied just twice—at 1-1 in each set—before Sabalenka surged ahead, firing six aces and breaking Paolini’s serve four times.
“I definitely would say that this was one of the best matches of the season so far,” she added. “I was just so focused on myself and the things I had to do. It felt like everything was going smoothly my way.”
The 26-year-old is determined to avoid a repeat of her recent final defeats at Indian Wells and the Australian Open, where she lost to Madison Keys.
“The lesson from those losses is to focus on myself, not on what’s happening on the other side,” Sabalenka said. “I really feel this time I’m going to do better than I did in the last two finals.”
By reaching the Miami final, Sabalenka joins an elite group as only the sixth woman to reach both finals on the American ‘Sunshine Swing’ in the same season.
With her confidence high and her game in top form, she now looks to cap off her impressive run with the Miami Open trophy.
