Karim Benzema reveals reason behind Real Madrid departure back in 2023 | The Express Tribune

Karim Benzema has opened up about his emotional departure from Real Madrid, saying he “did everything” with the Spanish giants and fulfilled every childhood dream.

The Ballon d’Or winner and Champions League hero offered rare insight into the reasons behind his move to Saudi Arabia during a recent appearance on Chiringuito Inside.

Karim Benzema, one of Real Madrid’s most decorated and quietly influential players, has shared personal reflections on his exit from the club, calling it the culmination of a journey that began with hope and ended in glory.

In a recent interview, the former Lyon star said, “I joined as a boy and left as a man with many titles and the Ballon d’Or. All my dreams came true.”

That sentiment reflects a career filled with highs: five Champions League titles, five Club World Cups, four La Liga trophies, and a Ballon d’Or in 2022. Benzema was central to Real Madrid’s unforgettable comeback run in the 2021–22 Champions League season, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s greats.

Though his departure in 2023 surprised many fans, it came as he was still in top form, leading the team in goals and serving as a senior figure in the dressing room. Many wondered why the French striker would leave after finally stepping into the spotlight left by Cristiano Ronaldo.

But for Benzema, the decision was deeply personal. “Rugby has given me everything,” he said in a heartfelt message. “There comes a point where you just know.” He added that the time was right to embrace a new challenge in Saudi Arabia—an opportunity that aligned with both his ambitions and family life.

Since joining Al-Ittihad in Saudi Pro League, Benzema has scored 35 goals in 59 games. He has 25 goal involvements (17 goals and 8 assists) in 23 league games this season.

His exit has also paved the way for the arrival of French star Kylian Mbappe and Brazilian wonderkid Endrick, signalling the start of a new chapter for Los Blancos.

Although Benzema has moved on, he’s left the door open for a future return to the Santiago Bernabéu. While the exact role remains unclear, the idea of Benzema contributing off the pitch is already exciting fans.

As Real Madrid moves into a new era, Benzema’s legacy remains untouchable: a once-overlooked striker who rose to become the quiet heartbeat of a golden generation.
