Kumbh Mela 2025: The Kumbh Mela, one of the most significant spiritual gatherings, is set to take place in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, 2025. Celebrated every 12 years, this grand event draws millions of devotees, saints and pilgrims from across the world.
According to Hindu mythology, gods and demons churned the ocean to extract Amrit (nectar of immortality). A fierce battle occurred between them over the nectar and in the struggle, drops of Amrit fell at four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. These places became the sacred sites of the Kumbh Mela.
With the 2025 Kumbh Mela approaching, here’s a look at the importance of the holy rivers during this sacred gathering.
Different Rituals At Triveni Sangam
Shahi Snan
At Prayagraj, the Triveni Sangam, the meeting point of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers, becomes the centre of devotion during the Kumbh Mela. One of the most significant rituals performed here is the Shahi Snan (royal bath) on key dates.

Millions of devotees participate in this sacred ritual as they believe that bathing in the holy waters washes away sins and brings spiritual purification. This act is also thought to free both the individual and their ancestors from the cycle of rebirth and offers a path to Moksha (liberation).
Aarti
Another significant ritual held along the riverbanks is the Ganga Aarti which highlights the spiritual importance of the holy river. During this ritual, priests perform traditional ceremonies using lit lamps.
Thousands of devotees gather to witness the Aarti and offers prayers to show their deep respect for the sacred river. This ritual represents devotion and strengthens the spiritual bond people share with the holy river.

Prayers and Offerings
At the Kumbh Mela, devotees believe that deities visit the Sangam during this sacred time. To honour them, rituals like Shraadh (offering food and prayers to ancestors) and Veeni Daan (offering hair to the Ganges) are performed which symbolise surrender and purification.
Satsang, where devotees listen to teachings from saints and scholars, is another important practice that helps deepen spiritual understanding. They also engage in acts of giving such as Gau Daan (donation of cows), Vastra Daan (donation of clothes), Dravya Daan (donating of money) and Swarn Daan (gold).
Deep Daan
During the Kumbh Mela, the ritual of Deep Daan brings a stunning visual to the sacred river. Devotees light thousands of small earthen lamps (Diyas) and float them on the flowing waters of the Triveni Sangam as an expression of gratitude.
These lamps, made from wheat flour and filled with oil, create a glowing reflection on the river. This act symbolises spiritual devotion and purity. The sight of the lamps floating on the water with Mela taking place in the background leaves a lasting impression on all who witness it.
