A vibrant wonderland by Anna Spiro filled with bold pattern and colour
I wanted this main space to feel relaxing. The room is long and quite narrow, so I decided to book-end it with a wraparound sofa, which makes it feel wider and provides lots of seating. I designed the room around the ‘Island Garden’ wallpaper, which I created in collaboration with de Gournay; I chose all the fabrics to complement the colours within the design. The plain fabric on the sofa is quiet and its pale shade almost perfectly matches the soft sea-foam blue in the wallpaper. It’s important that everything feels harmonious and connected, but offbeat at the same time.
I was looking for a cushion fabric that would be bold and interesting, and more geometric in its form. The colours in the embroidered medallions of Manuel Canovas’ ‘Villars’ cotton-mix fabric tie in beautifully with the wallpaper. Some old kilim cushions and a Kantha textile on the ottoman throw the perfection off, which is always important when mixing patterns and colour in a room. I have collected antiques my entire life. Here, the 19th-century side tables bring a sense of history and sophistication to the space. I love the fact that there are rarely two pieces the same.
