Amanda Seyfried recently shared her fond memories of filming Mean Girls on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. 

Seyfried, who played Karen Smith in the 2004 teen comedy, reminisced about the “unadulterated fun” she had while making the film at just 17 years old.

Host Josh Horowitz highlighted the film’s enduring popularity, noting that Seyfried will continue to be quoted by fans for years to come. 

“Until the day you die, a 14-year-old girl will come up to you every day and quote you as if it just came out the day before,” Horowitz said.

Seyfried welcomed the prospect, saying, “I hope they quote it on my grave.” She attributed the film’s lasting impact to its organic and relatable portrayal of high school life. 

“That’s an organic moment. It was, in many ways, a perfect movie, and people relate to it, still. It connected us, and it continues to. I will always be excited to talk about it.”

The actress also acknowledged the significant role Mean Girls played in her personal and professional growth. “Any day, I’ll honour that movie for what it did for me as a person.”

Written by Tina Fey, Mean Girls starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Jonathan Bennett, Lizzy Caplan, and Fey. 

The film follows Cady Heron (Lohan), a naive teenager who navigates a new high school and becomes embroiled in a popular clique known as The Plastics.

Seyfried reflected on the unique experience of filming Mean Girls, her first major movie role. “I truly think the experience of making it has nothing to do with how well it did, for sure,” she said. 

“I think the experience for me is very specific, because I’d never been in a movie before. I’d never been on a set like that before. And I was working with people who had. So, for me, it was just, everything was new.”

The original Mean Girls was followed by a sequel, Mean Girls 2, in 2011, featuring a new cast and storyline. A musical feature film adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical was released in 2024.
