New Year 2025 is about to begin in three weeks and the first Amavasya of the year is the Maghi Amavasya, also known as Mauni Amavasya. According to the Hindu calendar, Amavasya falls on the Amavasya Tithi of the Krishna Paksha every month. On this day, people bath in holy rivers and make donations.
Devotees perform rituals such as Tarpan, Pinddaan, and Shradh for ancestors to seek relief from Pitra Dosh and receive their blessings. There are 12 Amavasyas in a year.
In 2025, the Maha Kumbh will begin in Prayagraj on January 13, and a Shahi Snan will be held on Mauni Amavasya. The new year will also witness two Shani Amavasyas.
Dr Mrityunjay Tiwari, astrologer at Maharishi Panini Sanskrit and Vedic University in Ujjain, shares when the first Amavasya of 2025 will take place and reveals the complete Amavasya calendar for 2025.
First Amavasya of 2025
As per the Panchang, Maghi Amavasya or Mauni Amavasya is the first Amavasya of the new year, occurring on Wednesday, January 29. The Amavasya Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Magh month begins at 7:35 pm on January 28 and ends at 6:05 pm on January 29.
Based on the Udayatithi, the festival of Mauni Amavasya will be observed on January 29.
Maghi Amavasya in Siddha Yog
According to astrologer Mrityunjay Tiwari, the day of Maghi Amavasya coincides with Siddha Yog, which will last until 9:22 pm. Bathing and donating on Maghi Amavasya should be done during this auspicious period. Observing a vow of silence is also a customary practice on Mauni Amavasya.
Two Shani Amavasyas in 2025
Astrologer Tiwari also mentioned that in 2025, there are two Shani Amavasyas. On these days, devotees bathe and make donations while offering special prayers to Lord Shani. Astrological remedies are also undertaken to mitigate the adverse effects of Shani’s Saade Saati and Dhaiya.
