Akanksha Sharma, Co-Founder and CEO, CITTA, emphasizes the need to celebrate this diversity. “Indian skin is beautifully unique, ranging across a spectrum of undertones and often prone to concerns like hyperpigmentation. Yet, conventional beauty norms have long favored lighter complexions and unrealistic perfection. It’s time to redefine beauty on our own terms. Self-acceptance is the most powerful beauty statement—whether it’s flaunting your natural skin tone, embracing freckles, or celebrating textured hair,” she says.

The rise of social media has played a significant role in dismantling beauty stereotypes. Platforms like Instagram and YouTube have given individuals the confidence to share their stories, promoting self-love and diversity. Ritika Jayaswal, Founder and CEO, Nourish Mantra, highlights how the digital age has fueled a shift toward genuine representation. “Traditional beauty standards, often shaped by media and advertising, have long promoted unrealistic expectations. However, with growing awareness and self-acceptance, people are breaking these molds. Brands are responding by featuring diverse models and showcasing unedited beauty ads that celebrate real skin textures, scars, and natural hair. The focus has shifted from ‘looking beautiful’ to ‘feeling beautiful,’ with more emphasis on self-care as a path to confidence.”

Beyond skin tone and body type, the modern beauty industry is also evolving to embrace gender inclusivity. Jayaswal notes, “Authenticity in beauty is about self-expression without fear of societal expectations. The industry is gradually moving beyond gender norms, allowing everyone the freedom to define their own beauty.”
