Chaiti Chhath 2025 Calendar: For Hindus, the festival of Yamuna Chhath, also called Yamuna Jayanti, is very significant. Chhath Puja is a major celebration that is observed twice a year during the months of Kartik and Chaitra. This ancient celebration, which is dedicated to Surya God and Chhathi Maiyya, is even mentioned in the scriptures.

During Navratri, Yamuna Chhath, which falls in the month of Chaitra, honours the birth of Goddess Yamuna, one of Lord Krishna’s eight consorts. This Chhath is known as Chaiti Chhath in Bihar, Jharkhand and some parts of Madhya Pradesh, while it is grandly celebrated as Yamuna Chhath in the Braj region of the country, which includes Mathura and Vrindavan.

Chhath Arghya is a key ritual where devotees offer prayers to the setting and rising sun while standing in water, expressing gratitude for health, prosperity, and well-being. This ritual, performed during Chhath Puja, symbolises devotion, purity, and a deep connection with nature.

According to Drik Panchang, Chaiti Chhath will be celebrated on Thursday, April 3, this year. The Shashthi Tithi will begin at 11:49 PM on April 02 and end at 09:41 PM on April 03.

Chaiti Chhath 2025: History and Significance

The Hindu scriptures state that the Goddess Yamuna is a consort of Lord Krishna and that she came to earth on Shashti tithi shukla paksha during the month of Chaitra. For this reason, the people of Vrindavan and Mathura devote themselves to praying to the Goddess.

Several Hindus celebrate this festival with tremendous zeal and steadfastness. In addition to praying to the Goddess, they express their gratitude to her by bathing in the river. It is believed that the Yamuna River is sacred.

Yamuna’s birth anniversary is commemorated on this day each year.

Yamuna Chhath 2025: Puja Rituals

  1. Devotees bathe in the Yamuna River both at sunrise and sunset.
  2. After bathing, they chant Yamuna Aarti, offer water to the rising sun and light a diya with Desi ghee.
  3. Devotees offer prayers to Lord Krishna on this day because Goddess Yamuna is considered to be Krishna’s close companion.
  4. On the day of Yamuna Chhath, devotees also observe a rigorous fast. They abstain from all food and liquids for a full day.
  5. They provide bhog prasad to the Goddess and after giving it to Lord Krishna and Goddess Yamuna, people give the prasad to friends and family and the meal to the Brahmins.
  6. Devotees also offer food and clothing to the underprivileged and in need.
  7. After praying, they finally break their fast the following day.
