NORAD, a bi-national organisation responsible for defending the homeland through aerospace warning, aerospace control, and maritime warning, has a unique tradition of tracking Santa. This is done through NORAD’s predecessor organisation, the Continental Air Defence Command (CONAD).

The modern tradition of tracking Santa originated in 1955 when a young child accidentally dialled the phone number of the CONAD Operations Centre after seeing a newspaper advertisement instructing children to call Santa.

At the time, the Director of Operations for CONAD, Harry Shoup, answered the phone and instructed his staff to check the radar for signs of Santa making his way south from the North Pole.

It was this moment that gave birth to this tradition, and since then NORAD dutifully tracks Santa’s location on December 24 and reports to millions of children and families across the globe.

Later, they established the NORAD Tracks Santa website, which lets children and adults all over the world track Santa’s location.

“While the tradition of tracking Santa began purely by accident, NORAD continues to track Santa. We’re the only organisation that has the technology, the qualifications, and the people to do it. And we love it! NORAD is honoured to be Santa’s official tracker!” NORAD’s official website reads.

Where is Santa right now?

As per NORAD’s tracking website, Santa is currently at the North Pole, where he lives with Mrs. Claus and the elves. They help the Santa make toys and take care of the reindeer year-round!

Each year on December 24, Santa and his reindeer launch from the North Pole very early in the morning for their trip around the world. The moment Santa leaves for the tour, NORAD tracks his location using radars, satellites, and jet fighters.
