A breakthrough carbon catalyst developed by researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) is revolutionizing the production of green hydrogen peroxide. Unlike traditional methods that require high-purity oxygen gas and costly palladium catalysts, this new approach enables efficient production in low-oxygen air environments using neutral electrolytes. By introducing mesopores into the carbon structure, the catalyst significantly reduces energy consumption and environmental impact.

This innovation tackles the long-standing challenges of hydrogen peroxide production, which traditionally involves the resource-intensive anthraquinone process. The boron-doped mesoporous carbon catalyst facilitates smoother oxygen transfer, achieving an 80% efficiency rate under near-commercial conditions. The catalyst maintains high activity even in low-oxygen environments, proving its potential for industrial-scale applications.

With this scalable and cost-effective technology, KIST’s carbon catalyst offers a greener alternative for industries ranging from medical and chemical manufacturing to semiconductors.
