A trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida isn’t quite complete without an experience inspired by your favorite Disney film. There’s just something about the magic coming to life right before your eyes, whether you feel that spark when stepping onboard an ancient Nordic vessel at Frozen Ever After, battling against the First Order on Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, or being whisked to France at the Be Our Guest Restaurant.

For this reason, one of the theme park’s most popular—and beloved—rides can be found in Tomorrowland at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has long been a favorite for visitors, bringing generations of “Toy Story” fans together to neutralize Evil Emperor Zurg in a galactic space battle (complete with laser cannons). While families line up out the door to fight against power-hungry robots and one-eyed spiders side-by-side, a recent announcement from Disney may have you rethinking your summer plans.

“New Space Ranger Spin updates coming to Disney World,” the company announced in late March. And don’t get us wrong—this is exciting news for “Toy Story” fans. The improved ride will include new ride vehicles with video monitors and real-time scoring updates, a new friendly robot teammate named Buddy, handheld blasters, and other gameplay enhancements. Best of all? The new game targets will be interactive with new lighting, sound, and vibration effects, meaning they’ll bring the battle to life in a whole new way for riders.

“Everyone had a great time, and our team learned a lot,” project creative director Justin DeTolla said, as shared in the announcement. “We’ve been working on this project for quite some time now, so it was exciting to see it all come to life for the first time in the field.”  

To make all of these changes, however, the ride will be temporarily closing, beginning in August. Disney World plans to reopen their flashy new version of Space Ranger Spin “next year,” the company said, though no official date has yet been set. If you’re hoping to team up with Buzz and beat Zurg a few times before the ride closes, make sure to plan your visit in the earlier summer months.
