Gingham has long reigned supreme in the world of home textiles, fashion, and more. The checked pattern is particularly popular in spring and summer, evoking images of warm-weather picnics and grassy parks, but it’s also pretty ubiquitous year-round.

It’s hard to imagine a world in which gingham is second-place to any other check-type pattern, but we might be entering that world in 2025.

In a recent Instagram reel talking about her Guinness World Record-breaking turn as host on Saturday Night Live when she was just seven years old, we noticed a surprising addition to the sofa behind Drew Barrymore that we couldn’t take our eyes off: a houndstooth-patterned throw pillow.

The pillow itself is fairly innocuous—a small black and white houndstooth pattern with white tassels on its four corners. It’s not big or bright or in-your face.

Yet in the context of the rest of the room behind Barrymore, it does stand out. She’s known for her love of pastel hues and floral prints, whether it’s in her home or in her furniture and appliance collection for Walmart.

And the rest of the room in the video has that same feel: sage green walls, a bouquet of bright pink flowers in the middle of the coffee table, and a framed monstera print just above her head.

That’s not to say the pillow looks out of place—on the contrary, it somehow works. Maybe it’s because the pattern is so delicate, and black and white go with everything.

Or maybe it’s because, like gingham, houndstooth is actually a very classic pattern that works almost anywhere.

It can be paired with floral prints for a multi-dimensional look. It works well in minimalist or maximalist decor, from more retro or vintage-leaning styles to ultra-modern ones.
