A social media post claims that Kangen’s Alkaline Ionised water works as a miracle drink and prevents diseases and ageing. We fact checked and found the claim to be Mostly False.

The Claim

An advertisement on social media advertisement claims that drinking alkaline ionised Kangen water can prevent diseases, slow ageing, improve memory, prevent cancer, manage diabetes, and cure multiple conditions.

Fact Check

Is Kangen’s alkaline ionised water free from disease-causing risks?

No, there is no evidence that Kangen water prevents diseases. The idea that alkaline ionised water can protect you from illness sounds appealing. But here’s the reality: diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, lifestyle, genetics, or environmental factors — not by the pH of the water you drink.

Multiple studies, including research published in The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, have shown that while alkaline water may slightly affect urine pH, it has no role in preventing or curing diseases. The body already has an incredible acid-base balancing system. Your kidneys and lungs maintain your blood pH at a steady level. Drinking alkaline water doesn’t magically change that.

In simple words, your body’s chemistry is not so easily influenced by what’s in your glass.

Does Kangen water slow down ageing?

No, it does not slow aging, neither any studies done on humans! Ageing is a complex natural process. It’s influenced by genetics, cell damage, lifestyle, and environmental exposure. No water whether it’s detox or alkaline or ionised can reverse or slow this down.

Although some studies indicate that alkaline ionized water might have positive effects on longevity, such as a 2016 mouse study showing improved survival rates, the evidence supporting its ability to extend lifespan is still limited and needs further investigation.

Can alkaline ionised water cure joint pain or kidney problems?

No, there is no medical backing for these claims. Joint pain, arthritis, or kidney issues are complex medical conditions. Drinking alkaline water will not act as a magical cure. The Arthritis Foundation said there is little to no evidence that higher pH water can help with joint pain. In fact, kidney experts warn that patients with chronic kidney disease should avoid excessive alkaline water, as it can disturb electrolyte balance and worsen their condition. A study was published clearly mentioning in bold letters that alkaline water does not prevent kidney stones.

According to the Harvard Health, people with impaired kidney function should be very cautious with high-mineral or altered pH water. So, not only is this claim unsupported — it could even be dangerous.

Does Kangen water regulate sugar levels or prevent cancer?

No, these are false claims. This is perhaps the most misleading part of the advertisement. Diabetes management relies on diet, exercise, medication, and medical supervision — not the pH level of your water. The American Diabetes Association makes no mention of alkaline water in diabetes care guidelines.

And what about cancer prevention? The American Institute for Cancer Research and Cancer Research UK have made it very clear — cancer cells do not thrive or die based on the pH of what you drink. Your stomach acid neutralises any water you consume, and your blood pH is tightly regulated. There is zero scientific evidence that alkaline water can prevent or cure cancer.

Dr Pooja Khullar, a Radiation Oncologist at Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital in New Delhi, shares her view on alkaline water and cancer prevention. She explains, “While the idea of alkaline water preventing cancer may seem appealing, there is no strong scientific evidence to support it. Cancer is a complex disease, and drinking water with a different pH level won’t prevent its development. Alkaline water is essentially bottled water with varying mineral content and cannot alter the pH of your blood.”

Can alkaline water improve memory and eyesight?

No. There’s no scientific evidence that alkaline water can improve memory or eyesight. Alkaline water has a higher pH than regular water and is often marketed with health claims, but research does not support cognitive or vision-enhancing benefits. Memory and eyesight are influenced by factors like nutrition, sleep, exercise, and overall health. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins A, C, and E play a more proven role. Staying hydrated is essential, but alkaline water offers no special advantage for brain or eye health.

Can drinking alkaline water reduce uric acid?

May be. A 2024 study presents a new perspective on non-drug methods for managing uric acid-related issues and discomfort. It suggests that alkaline water may help in reducing serum uric acid levels, easing pain, and improving overall quality of life for patients. However, more extensive research is necessary to verify these initial findings and to better understand the long-term safety and effectiveness of using alkaline water for managing uric acid concerns.

Dr Almas Fatma, Diploma in Family Medicine, PG in Digital Health, General Physician from Navi Mumbai said, There are some studies suggesting that alkaline water may help neutralize uric acid, the evidence is of low quality and lacks strong clinical backing. Uric acid levels are primarily regulated by kidney function, diet, and metabolism.Alkaline water alone is unlikely to have a significant therapeutic effect.

Is Kangen’s alkaline water safe for daily use?

Yes, but it’s unnecessary and expensive. At the end of the day, alkaline ionised water is generally safe for healthy individuals in small amounts. But spending thousands on a machine for ordinary drinking water makes little sense. Your body is perfectly capable of balancing pH on its own.

In fact, plain clean drinking water, eaten with a balanced diet, does the job just fine. The World Health Organization guidelines recommend safe, potable water without contamination but do not endorse ionised water.

Bottom Line

Kangen water is not harmful in moderation but does not cure, prevent, or manage diseases. It does not slow ageing or offer magical health benefits. These are marketing tactics with no scientific backing. Plain safe drinking water, balanced nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle are your best friends for good health, not expensive water machines.
