People are often encouraged to donate blood, highlighting its benefits. Many regularly donate, helping those in need. According to doctors, young people, in particular, should donate blood from time to time. Some believe it should be done monthly, while others suggest donating only once or twice a year. The question arises: how often can a healthy person donate blood, and who should avoid it?

Dr Sonia Rawat, Director of the Preventive Health and Wellness Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, told News18 that blood donation benefits the body. It helps regulate iron levels and reduces the risk of heart disease. After donating, the body produces new red blood cells, improving blood quality. It also enhances blood circulation and oxygen supply to organs. Healthy individuals should donate blood periodically, as it can save lives.

How Often Can One Donate Blood?

Dr Sonia explained that a healthy person can donate blood every eight weeks, or approximately every two months. Ideally, donating every three months is beneficial. This means blood can be donated four to six times a year. However, this applies only to healthy individuals. Those with infections or medical conditions should consult a doctor before donating. A medical check-up is advised before donation to detect any underlying issues.

Who Should Avoid Donating Blood?

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should refrain from donating blood.
  • Those with low haemoglobin or iron levels should also avoid it.
  • People recovering from surgery or major illness should not donate.
  • Those with heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes should consult a doctor beforehand.
  • Individuals with infectious diseases such as hepatitis, HIV, or syphilis must not donate blood.
  • People who consume drugs or excessive alcohol should avoid blood donation.
