How to Dry Brush Your Body for Smooth and Glowing Skin
When it comes to body care, learning how to dry brush your body is one of the best methods for addressing multiple skin concerns. Not only do the best dry brushes provide exfoliation for smoother skin, they also can improve body circulation and prevent ingrown hairs.
What is dry brushing?
“Dry brushing assists in stimulating the skin to provide external exfoliation and to keep your skin feeling supersoft,” says Stacey Heintzman, an esthetician at Gingery Esthetic. “It’s also wonderful for circulation and moving stagnant lymph, which leaves your skin looking dull. By dry-brushing consistently, you will help the energy in your body move around to create a beautiful, healthy glow.”
If you’re also looking for a new way to de-stress at the end of the day, you’re in luck. According to esthetician Sarah Akram, dry brushing can actually relax muscles. Another added benefit? Teresa Songg, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Marmur Medical, says dry brushing is one of the best ways to remove dead skin cells without drying out skin.
How to dry brush
You’ll want to dry brush before showering or bathing for the best results. Akram warns against applying too much pressure, which can lead to skin irritation. Starting at your feet, apply light pressure and brush your body using upwards circular motions. Dr. Songg also says to skip any sensitive areas that are prone to bruising and avoid going over the same area twice.
Once you’ve finished dry brushing, following it up by cleansing in the shower then applying your favorite moisturizer or body oil.

How often to dry brush
Treat dry brushing the same as your favorite face exfoliator. A good rule of thumb is one or two times a week. Consistency is key: Heintzman recommends dry brushing at least once a week to get real results. If you have sensitive skin or a condition like rosacea or eczema, consult your dermatologist before learning how to dry brush your body.
