How to Tell Which Trader Joe’s Locations Sell Alcohol, and What Types They Have
Browsing aisles of wine and beer while shopping for groceries makes dinner planning incredibly easy. One supermarket chain not only sells alcohol, but has become known for its own excellent brews and bottles: Trader Joe’s.
The fan-favorite grocery chain sells a range of private-label, national, and local options of wine, beer, and spirits, which are beloved for their staggeringly low prices (think a bottle of Pinot Noir for just $10).
If you’ve visited multiple locations of Trader Joes’s, you might have already learned that not every store sells wine, beer, and spirits. Plus, some locations may sell just one or two of these options. If you want to know where to snag your favorite bottle of Two Buck Chuck (the chain’s famously low-priced Charles Shaw wine) or try the new Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter, here’s exactly how to find out which Trader Joe’s locations sell alcohol.
Why should you buy alcohol from Trader Joe’s?
Trader Joe’s carries both name-brand and private-label alcoholic products that range from wine and beer to spirits like bourbon and gin. Products with the “Trader Joe’s” label aren’t actually made by Trader Joe’s — the brand works with producers to source beverages it likes, then puts its name on them. This process is part of what helps TJ’s continue to keep its prices low while putting its own name on such a wide variety of drinks. If you want to learn more about where a certain bottle of wine or liquor is from, you can typically find the producer in fine print on the back of the bottle.
Why don’t all Trader Joe’s locations sell alcohol?
The answer to this question comes down to one thing: liquor laws. In the United States, the regulation of how alcohol is produced, sold, distributed, and consumed is left up to individual states. Liquor laws can sometimes vary between cities and counties as well, so they might not always be uniform across an entire state.
Liquor laws also may allow for the sale of only beer, or beer and wine, in grocery stores. This is why some Trader Joe’s locations only sell certain types of alcohol.
Which Trader Joe’s locations sell alcohol?
The easiest way to find out whether a specific Trader Joe’s location sells alcohol is by going to the store’s website.
On traderjoes.com, navigate to the bottom of the page, and go to “Locations by State.” From there, select your state, city, and the exact store you want to know more about. On the page, along with basic details like store hours and address, you’ll see a clear descriptor of whether it sells alcohol, and the kinds on offer. Trader Joe’s even provides hours for when its booze is available for sale, which might differ from the standard store hours. In some cases, the hours of sale for liquor might be slightly different than the hours for beer and wine.
