For many years, my bedroom was incredibly boring to look at. It was low on style and heavy on plants. The bed frame was just a metal base so I didn’t even bother trying to make it a focal point in the room and make it look nice—why fight a losing battle?

However, my whole perspective on my bedroom changed when I got a real bed frame that has a headboard with a changeable cover.

Thuma Pillowboard

I’m not going to lie, I had never wanted a fabric headboard (well, in 2010 I did, but it was trendy then). It seemed like it would get dusty and it’d be a color that I’d have to commit to for as long as I had the frame. Plus, what do you do if you like to eat in bed and you subconsciously wipe your greasy little fingers on it?

The pillowboard addresses all my concerns. It doesn’t actually attach to the bedframe; it’s kept in place by being squished between the mattress and the wall. The covers come in a variety of colors and textures and are machine-washable. And if I ever get sick of it (doubt it), I can just tuck it away in the closet.

Changing Up the Style

I change the aesthetic of my bed not just through the color of the pillowboard covers, but also through the material. The covers are available in linen weave and bouclé. I have one in velvet as well though from probably a special limited release.

The linen cover is light gray, and it’s my preference for late spring and all of summer. The velvet cover is emerald green and the bouclé is black, so I swap those in fall, winter, and early spring to change up the room’s look.

When I break out the ivory quilt for summer, the soft gray linen gives the space a more coastal look. In fall, I switch to a sage green duvet cover and get out the black bouclé for a cozy fall feel. I don’t have to change anything else in the room, but the entire aesthetic shifts because I’ve redecorated the focal point. 

I’m Obsessed With the Frame

The bed frame does a lot of the heavy lifting for making my bedroom look stylish. It’s a gorgeous walnut-color upcycled wood in a style that feels vaguely Japandi. There’s enough clearance underneath (9 inches) I can store luggage and my Open Spaces storage bins holding the extra linens.

There’s about an extra two inches of space beyond the mattress, and I’ve never stubbed my toe on the corners or hit my knee on the sides. It just doesn’t stick out. It’s also never made a noise. No squeaking or creaking. 

One of the best features though is setup. Setting up the Thuma bed frame requires no tools, and no assistance. I recently got a new rug to put under the bed and needed to the take the bed apart to place the rug. I had the whole thing broken down and leaned against the wall in less than 10 minutes. I rolled out the rug, and the frame was together again in 10 more.

All the pieces lock together with Japanese joinery, and then there’s two screws that can be hand-tightened (though I only had to put those on when I assembled it the first time).
