I Can’t Stop Wearing the Polarizing Jeans-Alternative That’s Trending for Spring

Those who know me (and my sense of style) can attest that I’ve never met a micro-trend I didn’t love. When barn jackets dominated the outerwear trend cycle last fall, I scoured the men’s department of every store in Soho in search of the ideal oversized, vintage-y fit. My ballet sneaker count is up to three pairs, none of my bags are without charms, and I’ve hardly taken off my favorite barrel jeans since I got my hands on them in February.

That being said, bloomers have been a staple in my warm weather wardrobe long before they started trending last year. I gravitate toward romantic, airy pieces during the spring and summer, and bloomers are a natural fit with my collection of nightgown-esque cotton dresses, corset tops, and satin ribbons. Above all, the Victorian underwear-inspired bottoms are just so comfortable.

With the trending status of bloomers at an all-time high this spring, it’s easier than ever to find the perfect pair. But, allow me to introduce you to the Free People Forever Young Pants, which have replaced jeans as my versatile go-to pants.

Available in seven colors, the Forever Young Pants are capri-length bloomers that were at the top of my wishlist for months before I finally scored a pair a few weeks ago. Between the scalloped lace trim and the tie-front waistband, I fell in love with the dreamy details of these boho bottoms. They’re totally my style, so I knew I would be happy with them, but I was still so impressed with the perfect drapey fit and stunning, slightly sheer fabric.

The strongest selling point for these pants, though, is how comfortable they are. The adjustable elastic waist has tons of stretch, so it doesn’t feel tight at all, and the billowy, lightweight material is super breathable. It’s not an exaggeration to say they feel like my comfiest pajamas, yet earn me more compliments than any other pants I own thanks to their trendy, effortlessly cool look.

Now, I know that bloomers may seem a tad intimidating if you have yet to incorporate 19th- century undergarments into your 21st-century closet. However, I promise the Forever Young Pants are surprisingly easy to style for different occasions.

For example, I love to juxtapose the baggy silhouette with a tailored jacket and slingback heels for an unexpected nighttime look. For a more casual vibe, I lean into the boho aesthetic by pairing them with motorcycle boots or ballet flats, but they also look just as cute with sneakers if that’s your everyday shoe of choice. Plus, with summer just around the corner, I can already imagine wearing them with flip-flops and a little camisole or ribbed tank to stay cool on particularly sweltering days.

All of this is to say that I’ve welcomed the newfound mainstream popularity of bloomers with open arms, and once you’ve tried the breezy bottoms yourself, you’ll wonder why it took so long. Keep scrolling for a few more takes on the trend from Anthropologie, Banana Republic, and Amazon
