I Grow Tomatoes, Cucumbers, and More from Seed—Here Are 16 Garden Supplies You Need for Seedtime

Two things happen every spring to let me know that it’s time to plant indoor seedlings: The first crocus of the new season pops up in my back-left garden, and the local nursery leaves tulips out overnight. I’m happy to report that both have happened, so it’s officially go-time here in Plant Hardiness Zone 7b.

Seed season, which is also referred to as “seedtime” or “germination time,” is a marker in time for gardeners when we can plant seeds indoors in tiny starter pellets. By the time these seedlings grow tall enough—typically six weeks before the last expected frost date—the temperature should be warm enough to plant them outdoors. It’s my favorite way to count down to spring gardening.

I’ve been checking Amazon every day and finally, a bunch of garden supplies have been added to Amazon’s New Releases and its Lawn and Garden Must-Haves storefront. While there are hundreds of new additions, this amateur gardener vetted them all, and these are the only 16 you need to kick off seed season.

Vivohome Waterproof Seedling Heat Mat

Amazon

After years of participating in seed season, I finally caved this year and bought a heat mat for my seed-starting tray. At this insanely low price, I couldn’t justify going without a heat mat for yet another season (especially because the one at my local flower shop is six times more expensive). This water-resistant heating mat warms the root area to somewhere between 10 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit, which speeds up germination for faster growth and a healthier transplant rate. It fits a standard 1,020-seedling tray, and even comes with a carrying bag that you can store it in when it’s not in use.

Vensovo Terracotta Orchid Pots

Amazon

Terracotta planters are known for their porosity, and make a great choice of planter for plants that require well-drained soil. While most terracotta pots are great at providing aeration and preventing root rot due to overwatering, each pot in this three-pack works more effectively thanks to the holed design that promotes air circulation even further. If the soil ever gets too wet, the excess water can naturally leak out of the intended holes, saving your repotted orchids from advanced decomposition, fungal rot, wilting, pest infestations, and other issues associated with overwatering.

WondMall Plant Repotting Mat

Amazon

I’ve been gardening for years, and have only just resigned to getting a repotting mat. It was one of those things I thought of as a luxury, not a necessity, but after too many occasions when the potting soil ended up on the hardwood floors (sorry, honey!), my husband and I agreed that the $14 was worth it. Even quick repotting missions can turn into unexpected messes, as I’ve learned too many times, and having this thick faux leather one nearby has come in handy too many times to count already. It’s quick to dry, can easily be wiped clean, is reusable, foldable, easy to store, and stain- and soil- resistant. I can also feel how high-quality the imitation leather is, so I know this will be the first and last repotting mat I’ll ever need.
