IKEA Launches New Line of Accessible Home Products That Don’t Sacrifice Style for Function

IKEA has always felt like a store for everybody, and now it really is. On April 2, IKEA launched BÄSINGEN, a collection of accessible home products. The line’s products include features that make each item more user-friendly, like non-slip feet, drainage holes, and thick diameters for better gripping.

The demand for these products can’t be understated: over 70 million adults in the U.S. report having a disability. In a 2022 national poll, 88% of adults reported that it was important to remain in their homes for as long as possible. Doing so often requires making changes for accessibility.

“There are many people who experience impactful and common circumstantial changes that can make something as simple as taking a shower challenging. Yet, we see that the home environment is often not equipped for change,” said Wâtte Zijlstra, IKEA product design developer, in a press release.

The BÄSINGEN Collection

The six IKEA products in the collection are primarily for use in the bathroom, though they can be used elsewhere in the home as well. They were designed to blend functionality with beauty, with their aesthetic roots in the classic IKEA Scandinavian style.

“BÄSINGEN should blend in regardless of your style and shouldn’t be something you need to put away or hide,” said Sarah Fager, IKEA senior designer, in a press release.

Products range in price from $12 to $39. All items come in black, so they look good together.

“I hope people will enjoy BÄSINGEN products throughout different stages of life. Maybe they will use the products a bit less during certain periods, but they are always close at hand, ready to provide support,” Fager said.
