IKEA is your one-stop shop for everything home, from affordable furniture and decor finds to kitchen cabinets and smart lighting. But if you’re one of the 70 million U.S. adults with a disability, the offerings might not meet your needs. 

That’s why the popular retailer just launched a BÄSINGEN line with six accessible and inclusive products for a safer, more functional home. These highly visible (they’re intentionally dark) pieces can simplify daily tasks without compromising aesthetics—rather than feel sterile, they’re made to give you modern, design-forward solutions for common accessibility needs. 

About the BÄSINGEN Line

The BÄSINGEN collection was designed to address complex mobility challenges, whether acute or chronic. It’s clear that IKEA sought to combine its classic Scandinavian style with products that prioritize accommodation. 

“There are many people who experience impactful and common circumstantial changes that can make something as simple as taking a shower challenging. Yet, we see that the home environment is often not equipped for change,” product design developer Wâtte Zijlstra said in a press release. “The starting point for BÄSINGEN was a clear need for specific product functions. Then, we widened our scope through design to ensure the products are for the many, as BÄSINGEN is created to support anyone in their daily life.”

Accessibility Features

The collection has specific accessibility features that aim to make life easier. For starters, the bath products are thicker, softer, non-slip, and have drainage holes. There’s also a two-step stool that was designed with safety in mind. The dark anthracite color throughout looks modern and sleek but was specifically chosen to ensure every item stood out—you’re less likely to bump into them, or worse, trip over them. 

“I started this project by wanting to learn more about the needs and wishes of people with physical limitations,” said senior designer Sarah Fager. “It was one of my most challenging design projects because it was about meeting needs that were new to me. But this also made it one of my most enlightening projects. I hope people will enjoy BÄSINGEN products throughout different stages of life.”

What’s in the Collection

Not only are the products inclusive, they’re multi-purpose. For example, the shower shelf holds your favorite soaps but also works as a grip when you need extra support. (This is a trend you’ll notice throughout.) Here are all six products in the collection: 

• Toilet Roll Holder ($12): This rounded toilet paper holder has a shelf for essentials and doubles as a support bar when you need help standing up. 
• Shower Shelf ($12): This circular shower shelf has drainage holes and a vertical pole to hold onto while showering. 
• Towel Rail ($20): This extra-long oval towel rack doubles as an assist bar with safe rounded corners. 
• Shower Chair ($39): This sleek shower chair has drainage holes, non-slip feet, and an armrest. 
• Step Stool with Rail ($30): This non-slip, one-level step stool is easy to move with a durable, rounded side rail. 
• 2-Step Stool with Rail ($32): This two-level step stool has a side rail that can be mounted on the left or right and a non-slip surface.
