The history of International Day of Mine Awareness dates back to December 2005, when the United Nations General Assembly named April 4 as the official day to recognise the importance of mine action. The first International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action was observed in 2006.
As per the UN, the 28th International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisers (NDM-UN28) will be co-hosted by the United Nations Mine Action Service and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining from April 9 to 11. The meeting aims to bring together mining action leaders and experts to network and share views on the sector’s urgent concerns.
Over the last nearly two decades, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNAMS) has prioritised the needs of affected individuals while also adapting to the risks that humanitarians face.
