Is Meghan Markle's Raspberry Jam Worth the Hype? Here's My Honest Review

Is Meghan Markle’s Raspberry Jam Worth the Hype? Here’s My Honest Review

Let me be honest with you—on the afternoon of April 7, I needed a pick-me-up. (I had just watched The White Lotus finale the night before, okay?) Then, there it was: my box from As Ever, Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle brand. I had ordered the raspberry jam on April 2, before the entire range of products sold out in just an hour, with the limited-edition wildflower honey with honeycomb selling out in just five minutes.

“Open with care,” the box instructed me in the Duchess of Sussex’s carefully written calligraphy. My husband actually got the box and brought it into the house. “I think you need to do the honors,” he said. (See why I married him?)

As someone who writes about the royals all day every day, I am so enmeshed in the British royal family that I needed my husband’s fully untainted and completely out of the loop opinion to help me out. So there we stood, in our kitchen, admiring the packaging (I didn’t need the keepsake packaging the raspberry spread came in, but I didn’t see the slightly cheaper option to just get the jam, so now I have the keepsake packaging).

But, okay, back to the jam. I took the first bite. I tried to not be too reactive so as not to taint my husband, waiting next to me. Then, his turn. “Oh yeah,” he said. “Oh yeah.” Husband approved.

I am not a food writer and don’t pretend to be, but as a regular old consumer, this jam is really, really good. When I asked my husband how he would describe the jam, he said, “I have never really thought about how to describe jam. I’ve never even really thought about jam.” That’s when a lightbulb went off for me. For me, jam has always been secondary to whatever more interesting carb I was spreading it on. This jam, I’d eat without any other accoutrements. Don’t tempt me with a good time.

According to the jar, the jam is made of raspberries, organic pure cane sugar, organic lemon juice concentrate, and fruit pectin, which is apparently used as a thickener in cooking and baking. With only 35 calories per serving (and 12 servings suggested in the 7.6 oz jar), I can get behind it even more, as it won’t break my calorie bank for the day. It tastes like fruit with an exclamation point on it; it has a kick and an oomph. I respect Markle, but am certainly no sycophant—of her or any other member of the royal family—but I’ve got to give it to you, Duchess: you knocked this out of the park.

For a jam that’s been teased for over a year, it had a lot to live up to. It did that, and then some. Even the staunchest anti-Sussex troll cannot deny this. I only wish there was a way to give a bite to all of those who mocked Meghan, because, as she herself put it on Instagram as she announced the rebrand of American Riviera Orchard to As Ever, “I think we’re all clear at this point that jam is my jam.” About this, she is spot on. I’d be completely stunned if this doesn’t become As Ever’s hero product, not just for the first drop but for the first 100 drops.

My only complaint? That it’s unclear at this point when I can order more. Until then, I’ll savor each bite—and applaud a female entrepreneur for creating a truly remarkable product. Brava!
