Is Prince Harry Planning a Netflix Docuseries About His Late Mother, Princess Diana?

If certain reports are to be believed, Prince Harry is working on a major project as part of the Netflix deal he shares with wife Meghan Markle involving his late mother, Princess Diana.

On March 22, The Daily Express reported that Harry was in talks with the streaming service to make a two- or three-part docuseries about the late Princess of Wales, who died at just 36 years old in 1997 when her youngest son Harry was only 12 years old. The reported docuseries would premiere in 2027, marking the 30th anniversary of her death in a Paris car accident.

“The idea is that it would be a solo project for Harry, who would be a co-executive producer as well as hosting and narrating the series,” a senior Hollywood source told the outlet. “He is uniquely placed not only to talk about the woman he knew as his mother, but also to examine her role as an enduring social and cultural icon still beloved by so many.”

The production executive continued, “It’s felt that this is something he would handle with passion and sensitivity, offering fresh insights into not only her life, but also her lasting legacy.” Though the source told the outlet that “nothing has been agreed yet,” they added that “this is being talked about in an extremely positive way.”

Harry and Meghan signed a $100 million, five-year deal with Netflix in 2020 that is due to expire in 2025. The Diana docuseries assumes that the deal would be renewed, which Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos didn’t comment on when interviewed for a Variety cover story last week, though he did say that both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “are overly dismissed” and sang their praises.

The source for The Daily Express said, “Their next big deal with Netflix is going to be much more results-driven, rather than a massive upfront payment.”

But on March 23, The Independent refuted reports of a Diana docuseries, with a source close to Harry and Meghan’s partnership with Netflix telling the outlet that speculation about the project is “not true.” While it remains to be seen, the topic is no doubt compelling—and Meghan, for her part, already has her next project for the streaming service lined up: her lifestyle show With Love, Meghan—which debuted its first season on March 4—has already got a second season in the can, scheduled to air this fall.
