People often start their day with a cup of coffee. Most prefer black coffee, which is considered healthy. However, it is also advised to consume it in moderation due to its caffeine content. For many, the day feels incomplete without having a sip of coffee. Recently, fitness coach Dan Go made a statement that sparked a stir on social media. He said, “If you drink coffee every morning, then technically you are taking drugs every day.”
Coffee contains a natural stimulant called caffeine, which affects our nervous system. It increases alertness, improves mood, and helps enhance focus. For this reason, caffeine is classified as a psychoactive drug, even though it is legal and widely consumed around the world.
Is Drinking Coffee Harmful?
In his post, Dan Go referred to coffee as a “good drug.” Research has shown that drinking coffee in moderate amounts can benefit overall health. It can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, prevent diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, support heart and liver health, and may even protect against certain types of cancer. It acts as an effective energy booster before workouts.
Although coffee offers benefits, Dan Go advises against drinking it immediately after waking up. He explains that cortisol levels in the body are naturally high in the morning, and consuming caffeine at that time can lead to fatigue and an energy crash later in the day.
Instead, he suggests waiting 90 to 120 minutes after waking up before having your first cup. He also recommends avoiding coffee at least 10 hours before bedtime to maintain good sleep quality.
