Jason Isaacs Calls Out “Double Standard” After ‘The White Lotus’ Male Nude Scene

Season 3 of The White Lotus is well-underway. So far, the show is doing what it does best—unpicking the hypocrisies and fakeries of the super elite, while slowly but surely leading its audience towards an inevitable tragic finale. And, naturally, that means peppering each episode with more and more shocking moments as the characters slowly unravel within the gilded walls of a White Lotus hotel.

This season, one of the most talked-about moments has involved a Lorazepam-addled Timothy Ratliffe, a rather loose silk robe, and a family gazing on in horror. Yes, this season’s full-frontal moment featured Jason Isaacs baring it all. Naturally, the moment has gotten people talking—and most of them can’t help but wonder: was it a prosthetic?

Apparently, Isaacs is beginning to tire of the discourse. During a March 14 episode of CBS Mornings, host Gayle King raised the question to the actor.

“A lot of people are debating it and it’s all over the internet,” Isaacs, said. He went on to explain that he sees the discussion as a “double standard. “It’s interesting because the best actress this year was Mikey Madison at the Oscars—and I don’t see anyone discussing her vulva, which was on television all the time.”

He went on: “I think it’s interesting that there’s a double standard for men, but when women are naked—Margaret Qualley in The Substance—nobody would dream of talking to her about her genitalia or nipples or anything of those things.”

One of the hosts then noted that he had dodged the initial question.

“It is a dodge because I don’t think people really want to know how the sausage is made,” he replied.

Isaacs echoed the same thoughts during his appearance on Good Day New York . “Let me ask you this: If you had a woman on here, would you be very keen on talking about her downstairs area?” Isaacs said on the show. “Would you ever talk to an actress about it? I don’t think you would. I think it’s a terrible double standard.”

In another interview with Decider, Isaacs took another approach to the questions about the scene. “I think it’s digital,” Isaacs joked to the outlet. “I wasn’t there that day.”

Two of his co-stars did, however, reveal how the scene was filmed. “It was really funny. He was very excited to do it. I think he took pride in the prosthetic,” saidSarah Catherine Hook, who plays Isaacs’ daughter, Piper, in the show, to TV Insider. Added Sam Nivola, who plays his son, Lochlan, “He’s like, ‘It’s my fake dick scene today!’”

Although Isaacs has not been keen on discussing the mechanics of the scene, he has shared his thoughts on the stakes behind it, calling it his “go big or go home moment”. “He’s drugging himself into a stupor to try not to think about the fact that his entire life is blowing up and trying to work out what to do about it,” Isaacs told Entertainment Weekly of the moment. “It was actually quite challenging—I remember reading the scripts thinking, ‘Wow, I’ve got to keep my powder dry for five or six episodes, and then this shit really kicks off.'”
