Last year’s Mother’s Day family portrait was one of Kate Middleton’s biggest (of very few) controversies.

At the time, the image was revealed to have been manipulated after being removed from the Associated Press news wires. Of course, the public did not yet know that the princess was suffering from cancer and did not understand the reasons for her disappearance from public life.

A year later, the controversy has largely been forgotten, but seems to have set a precedent in Kensington Palace. On March 30, Kate Middleton celebrated Mother’s Day in a completely different way than her Instagram followers have been accustomed to in recent years.

Instead of posing with her children, the Princess of Wales published a video celebrating “Mother Nature’s Day,” in which only her hands appear resting on the trunk of a tree.

“Over the past year, nature has been our sanctuary,” the future queen wrote in her message. “This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate Mother Nature and recognise how our bond with the natural world can help not only nurture our inner selves, but remind us too of the role we play within the rich tapestry of life.”

The tone of her post is reminiscent of the video she used last September to announce her completion of chemotherapy. She also wrote about nature on World Cancer Day in February and while undergoing treatment for the disease last summer, acknowledging the “power of nature” to “support our development and wellbeing, both by bringing us joy and helping keep us physically, mentally and spiritually healthy.”
