A recent study has revealed that the problem of insomnia increases by 59% in people who use mobile phones at night or spend excessive screen time on other gadgets

Nowadays, people are so addicted to mobile phones that they cannot keep them away even before sleeping at night. Using a mobile phone for hours in bed not only disrupts sleep but also leaves one feeling tired and sluggish the next morning. This can lead to lethargy and drowsiness at work.

A recent study has revealed that the problem of insomnia increases by 59% in people who use mobile phones at night or spend excessive screen time on other gadgets. Conducted by researchers from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the study highlights that quality sleep is crucial for both mental and physical health. However, the habit of using phones late at night has become increasingly common, affecting sleep patterns as people stay awake for longer and struggle to wake up early in the morning.

A survey of 45,202 young adults aged 18 to 28 in Norway found that it does not matter what content is being viewed on the screen. According to the lead author, Dr Gunhild Johansen Hetland, no significant difference was observed between social media usage and other screen activities—simply watching the screen itself was enough to disrupt sleep. This is likely because screen time reduces actual sleep duration.

The study further revealed that using screens in bed can shorten sleep time by 24 minutes. Alarmingly, students were found to be the most affected. Dr Hetland warns that this can significantly impact mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being.

To improve sleep quality, it is recommended to turn off mobile phones at least 30–60 minutes before bedtime. Another study has also found that young people who do not get enough sleep are at a higher risk of developing high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease.
