Madonna Says She and Elton John Squashed Their Decades-Old Beef

Madonna uploaded a photo of herself and Elton John, telling the world that two have “finally buried the hatchet” and squashed their decades-old beef. The two of them posed for a photo together backstage at Saturday Night Live, which she shared on social media. She said that she and John are in a much better than they were over 20 years ago.

She started her lengthy Instagram caption off by saying that she has admired John’s artistry since she was in high school and wrote that she snuck out of the house to see him perform in Detroit. His music made her feel seen, she writes, and made her realize that it was ok—actually, essential, to stand out. “Over the decades it hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist,” the caption reads. ” I didn’t understand it.”

Madonna wrote that she learned about his appearance on SNL as the musical guest and decided to go and confront him. “When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, ‘Forgive Me’ and the wall between us fell down. Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Within minutes. We were hugging.”

She goes on to reveal that John actually had a song written for her and that he wanted to collaborate. “It was like everything came full circle!! And you can tell everybody, This is Your Song.”

According to Variety, the two’s beef began back in 2004 when Madonna won the award for classic songwriter at the Q Awards and John expressed his distaste for her win. “Madonna, best live act? Fuck off,” he said. “Since when has lip-syncing been live? Sorry about that, but I think everyone who lip-syncs on stage in public when you pay like 75 quid to see them should be shot. Thank you very much. That’s me off her Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No.”

He also made disparaging comments about her in a 2012 appearance on Good Morning America after she was announced as the halftime performer for that year’s Superbowl and said, “Make sure you lip-sync good.”

Over the years, he’s taken a few shots at the singer, and that seemed to end this past weekend after he apologized for what he said and got on good terms with the pop star.
