Matsya Jayanti is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Matsya, also known as Matsya avatar, who was Lord Vishnu’s first incarnation. He is believed to have saved the world from destruction. During the month of Chaitra, the festival is celebrated on the Tritiya, or third day, of Shukla Paksha.
On this day, Lord Vishnu is adored, and his ardent followers fast assiduously the night before and the day after. The celebration takes place during the auspicious time of Navratri and aligns with the Gangaur celebrations.
Devotees also plan a lavish puja for Lord Vishnu, and give out clothing and other items to those in need. The celebration has been mentioned in ancient manuscripts and is connected to several stories.

According to Drik Panchang, Matsya Jayanti will be observed on Monday, March 31, this year. The Matsya Jayanti Muhurat is between 1:40 PM to 4:09 PM, which is for a duration of two hours and 29 minutes.
The Tritiya Tithi will begin at 9:11 AM on March 31, 2025, and end at 5:42 AM on April 1, 2025.
Matsya Jayanti 2025: Rituals and Celebrations
Many rituals are performed to commemorate Lord Vishnu’s divine incarnation on Matsya Jayanti. Devotees adhere to the following important practices:
- In celebration of Matsya Avatar (Lord Vishnu), followers fast, take a bath and rise early during this festival.
- On Matsya Jayanti, many followers follow a rigorous fast, eating only satvik (pure) food.
- The fast lasts till dawn on the day after Matsya Jayanti, having started the day before.
- Before they break their fast, they pray and adore the deity.
- To obtain Lord Vishnu’s heavenly blessings, devotees repeat sacred mantras nonstop throughout the night.
- On this auspicious day, a lot of people also offer food and clothing to the poor and Brahmins.
- Before breaking the fast, prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu, and prasad is distributed to family members.
- Prasad is given to family members, and prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu before breaking the fast.
Matsya Jayanti 2025: Significance
Out of Lord Vishnu’s 10 Dashavatara, Matsya Avatar was the first. Mythology claims that Lord Vishnu has taken on several guises to protect this universe and his followers from malevolent forces. To save the universe during the Satya Yuga, Lord Vishnu in Matsya Avatar transformed into a fish and saved Manu, the first man, from Mahapralaya.
A key factor of Matsya Jayanti is offering the poor food, clothing and money. Acts of generosity are seen by devotees as a means of achieving spiritual progress and receiving blessings from Lord Vishnu.
