Michael Caine shares key insights about his acting career in tell-all memoir

Michael Caine has recently shared key insights about his movie career in Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over.

Reflecting on receiving Best Supporting Actor for Hannah and Her Sisters role, Caine wrote, “When people said to me, ‘That was the worst film I’ve ever seen!’, I’d say, ‘Probably, but it paid for a beautiful house for my mother, so what’s your problem?’” per Closer.

The Miss Congeniality actor remarked, “Second, I won my first Oscar just after filming Jaws. Talk about a contrast.”

Caine also looked back into his career and life, which he co-authored with Matthew d’Ancona.

“Make an effort to look for the bright side,” suggested the 91-year-old about his career, who had 150 movies to his name.

Caine remarked, “Very few failures are definitive or even important.”

Looking back at his childhood, Caine was born to a fish market porter and a cleaning woman, who fell in love with movies as a child.

“He wasn’t tall, dark and handsome and I looked at him and thought, well, he became a movie star, why can’t I?” reflected the actor.

Caine revealed he joined the theatre group at 11, saying, “I wanted to be around the best-looking girls,” he admits, adding that this made him see the potential in acting.”

“Pretty soon, I realised that acting itself was something I might just be good at,” he recalled.

Caine’s rise to fame with his role in 1966’s Alfie, where he played a London bachelor facing the existential price of his carefree lifestyle.

“I have a strong work ethic from my upbringing. You never lose it,” he maintained.

Caine added, “The old saying that the harder you work, the luckier you get — there’s a lot to be said for that.”

Meanwhile, Caine’s memoir, Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over hit the bookstores on March 25.
