I’ve grown up in a shoes-off household, so I’m used to having somewhat pristine flooring throughout the home. One of my biggest worries when moving in with my partner this summer was keeping our floors and area rugs clean, especially with his cat roaming around. 

I’ve bought washable rugs before and knew a quality one could be a pricey endeavor, but I was committed to adding one in our entryway to add warmth to the space and to signal to my partner and any visitors that this is the place to remove your shoes before entering my home. 

After a while of shopping around for washable rugs that fit the theme we were going for in our apartment, I decided to go with Tumble since the brand was highly rated by our testers. 

An Aesthetically Pleasing Choice 

The Spruce’s top pick for a washable rug is actually a cream-colored Tumble rug, which isn’t really my style and wouldn’t have matched my home’s color palette. Instead, I went with an indigo and bronze colored rug that’s absolutely to die for.

Not only does it match my apartment’s accidental rustic-but-make-it-blue theme, but it’s the perfect color for masking stains, making this a product that I won’t have to wash nearly as often as I originally anticipated.

Solving a Problem I Didn’t Know I Had

As a first-time cat parent, I had no clue just how much these little furry friends need to scratch something. I was also woefully unprepared for my boyfriend’s cat to ignore every scratching post I bought her for the first month or so of being in our new shared apartment. 

However, my cat was instantly attracted to this runner. Hearing the scratch-scratch-scratch sound coming from my entryway made my heart sink. I had only set the rug up maybe 20 minutes prior before my cat went to town on it—but I was completely shocked to see that I couldn’t even tell where the scratching had occurred.

This runner has now become one of her favorite horizontal scratching spots (much to my dismay) though you would honestly never be able to tell that that’s the case. The rug’s fibers stay firmly in place (unlike my ottoman…) with virtually zero damage visible. 

Why It’s Worth It

I originally hoped to get an entryway runner for much less than Tumble’s $139—but I’ve been here before, trying to find a deal and purchasing a low-quality product. I’ve gotten plenty of area rugs for a bargain that eventually got swapped for a higher-priced one for many reasons, but mostly because rugs can be really thin, even with a pad underneath. I absolutely did not want a thin runner to be the thing that greets me when I enter my apartment. 

First: it doesn’t move. The runner came with these excellent, reusable/washable pads that help it stick to the floor. I have tripped over many shifty rugs and curled rug corners despite the pads, but that’s not a problem here. And this is really important for an entryway—the last thing anyone wants is a guest to trip as soon as they come in.

Second, the quality is amazing and super cat-friendly, which I’m grateful for since I didn’t anticipate this runner becoming a scratching pad when I got it. 

Third, the color makes it the ideal choice for an entryway. We’ve definitely had some instances where something has been spilled on the runner or someone tracks dirt onto the runner and gets it a little dirty—and it really didn’t matter. The color and pattern hide stains beautifully until you’re ready to give it a wash.

• Durability: I wasn’t looking for anything that would be cat-approved but this runner certainly gets the kitty stamp of approval. My cat scratches it almost daily and it still looks fresh out of the box.
• Style: This is a great-looking rug and I’ve gotten many compliments on it from guests. It’s the perfect style to have in your entrance for a beautiful greeting.
• Ease of Cleaning: I’ve popped this into a standard washing machine once in my four months of having it and it came out looking brand new.
