Moroccanoil has yet to disappoint me—and I’ve tried virtually every product in the salon-brand’s repertoire. Moreover, celebrities including Demi Moore and Megan Fox rely on its shine-boosting, volume-enhancing hair elixirs, as does my 72-year-old mom, who swears its smoothing lotion eliminates frizz entirely. 

Choosing a favorite among the Moroccanoil shampoo collection, in particular, is akin to choosing which of my two cats I prefer—yet I find myself reaching for the brand’s Extra Volume Shampoo most frequently. Of the hundreds of plumping hair cleansers I’ve tried, Moroccanoil’s is among the few that delivers—visibly and wholeheartedly—on its thickening claims.

Moroccanoil Extra Volume Shampoo

The Moroccanoil Extra Volume Shampoo is a strand-pluming, root-lifting hair cleanser that adds body, bounce, and shine to fine, thinning hair. The sulfate-free formula is safe for color-treated tresses, and can be used daily without stripping strands of necessary moisture.

As with all Moroccanoil products, the volumizing formula is infused with argan oil, an ingredient hailed for its smoothing properties. “It’s often referred to as ‘liquid gold’ due to its rich composition of beneficial nutrients, including fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins,” trichologist Helen Reavey previously shared with InStyle. Moreover, due to its lightweight nature, argan oil imparts its benefits sans weightiness—making it ideal for limp hair prone to flattening. It’s equally perfect for dull, damaged, or frizzy hair, as it “smooths the outer hair cuticle,” Reavey noted, “locking in moisture and adding shine.”

On a similar shine-centric note, Moroccanoil’s formula also contains glycerin. Often found in hydrating skin care, the humectant works equally well for infusing hay-like strands with moisture—and, consequently, bestowing healthy-looking glossiness.

Linden bud extract is to thank for the formula’s plumping prowess, per the brand. Incidentally, studies have found the ingredient beneficial for balancing the scalp—which, ultimately, fosters a healthier environment for new hair growth. 

I turn to my Moroccanoil shampoo—and its corresponding conditioner—when I’m seeking ample fullness and maximum shine. It’s perfect prior to hot rollers, curling irons, and the round brushes I employ for at-home bombshell blowouts.

Finally, the Moroccanoil shampoo is indulgent from an olfactory standpoint. As with all its products, the hair cleanser is infused with the brand’s fragrance originale: a blend of amber, musk, and delicate floral notes that create an intoxicating, lasting sillage.
