Olivia Munn and John Mulaney’s Two Kids Are the Lights of Their Lives—All About Malcolm and Méi
In October 2024, InStyle hosted its inaugural Imagemaker Awards, during which John Mulaney surprised his wife (and the night’s Woman of Impact award recipient) with a sweet speech. After reflecting on Munn’s long, difficult battle with breast cancer, he gushed, “I thought how lucky our kids are to have you as their mother, how lucky I am to have you as my partner in life.” Their relationship has been living rent-free in my mind ever since he muttered those doting words.
The two actors first met at a wedding in 2013, though their relationship didn’t become romantic until eight years later. Munn and Mulaney were spotted on what looked like several dates the summer of 2021, and things became serious quickly when they announced they were expecting on September 7, 2021. Mulaney broke the news while appearing Late Night With Seth Meyers, revealing, “I’m gonna be a dad…we’re both really, really happy. You guys saved me from drugs, and Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery.”

A couple months later, they welcomed their son, Malcolm Hiệp, who became the glue in their relationship and a bright light amid Munn’s health battle. In March 2024, Munn announced she had been diagnosed with breast cancer a year prior, a scary experience that brought the couple closer together. “It would’ve felt like climbing an iceberg without him,” she told People of Mulaney, adding that in addition to being a major support system, he is “an incredibly hands-on father.” She continued, saying, “(He would go) to and from the hospital—taking Malcolm to the park, putting him to nap, driving to Cedars-Sinai, hanging out with me, going home, putting Malcolm to bed, coming back to me. And he did it all happily.”
In July 2024, it was the beginning of forever when the pair tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at a friend’s house in New York. They were married by actor Sam Waterston and had just one other guest in attendance, little Malcolm. The happy family became all the more happier in September 2024 when they expanded by one. The star couple welcomed a daughter, Méi June, via surrogate.

Munn and Mulaney officially became parents on November 24, 2021, when they welcomed their first child, a son named Malcolm Hiệp. Malcolm made his Instagram debut a month later when Munn posted a photo of him sleeping with the caption, “My Golden Ox baby. Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney. Happy Holidays. ❤️💚” She added a second sentence that has since been deleted, “He has his whole life ahead of him. He hasn’t even tried seltzer yet. I’m very in love with him and his whole deal.”
The Newsroom actress revealed in a November 2024 interview with GQ that she and Mulaney “barely knew” each other when she became pregnant with Malcom. “It wasn’t necessarily, ‘We’re going to be married and live together’ or any of that, but it was ‘I’ll be involved in some way,’” she said. However, two months before they welcomed their bundle of joy, they decided to try raising him together. Three years after that, they wed.
In October 2022, Munn shared that Malcolm was learning how to speak. In addition to teaching him English, she is teaching him Mandarin.

Munn shared on Good Morning America in May 2024 that Malcolm inspired her to share her breast cancer journey. “If I didn’t make it, I wanted my son when he got older to know that I fought to be here. That I tried my best,” she explained. A month prior, she opened up to People about how her double mastectomy temporarily affected her hands-on approach with Malcolm. “(Three days after surgery) Malcolm runs up and he said, ‘Mama, pick (me) up?’ ” she explained. “And I said, ‘Oh I can’t pick you up.’ And I squatted down to give him a hug, and then he just sat on my leg and goes, ‘But Mama, pick (me) up!’ That was probably one of the hardest things because all you want to do is pick up your baby.”
She continued: “When I’m with Malcolm, it’s really the only time your brain doesn’t think about that you’re sick. I’m just so happy with him. I’m just so happy in life. I mean, he’s just the most fun little person.”
In November 2024, Munn celebrated Malcolm’s third birthday with a sweet Instagram selfie. “Magic Malc turns 3 today 🥹 🎂 This photo was taken last year just around the time I found out I had breast cancer. I remember this time fondly all because of this little boy. He’s made me stronger and softer in ways I never knew I could be. Happiest Birthday my sweet boy. You cracked my heart wide open,” she wrote.
Méi June Mulaney

Munn became a girl-mom on September 14, 2024, when Méi June arrived via gestational surrogate. The actress commemorated her daughter’s birth a week later with a sweet Instagram post that also spoke to their choice to use a surrogate.
“Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon🐉,” she wrote. “I had so many profound emotions about not being able to carry my daughter. When I first met our gestational surrogate we spoke mother to mother. She showed me so much grace and understanding, I knew I had found a real-life angel. Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true.” She added that Méi means plum in Chinese.
Méi’s arrival also made Malcolm a big brother. The Big Mouth star gave some insight into their sibling bond during a November 2024 interview with People. “He likes it. It’s interesting, with our daughter, she’s two months old so she doesn’t do much,” Mulaney said. “And I think the first couple of weeks he thought she might be a toy because she’d squeak and he’d be like, ‘How do I make it do that again?’ Now I think he gets it, that this is a little girl.”
