Former Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter was friendly with the late Princess Diana, and revealed that she was intrigued by former U.S. First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

As he promoted his upcoming book When the Going Was Good: An Editor’s Adventures During the Last Golden Age of Magazines, Carter said that he remembered sitting next to the late Princess of Wales at several dinners. (Carter took over as editor-in-chief at Vanity Fair in 1992, five years before Diana’s death at 36 years old on August 31, 1997 as a result of a Paris car accident.)

Of Diana, “She was very intrigued and kept asking questions—she wanted to know how Jackie Kennedy was treated by the Kennedy family because, I think, she felt there were parallels between how Jackie was treated and the way she was treated by the royal family,” Carter said, per Page Six.

Onassis died in 1994, three years before Diana. That same year, Carter co-hosted the party where Diana wore her “revenge dress,” a rumored retaliatory move against then-husband Prince Charles’ affair with the former Camilla Parker Bowles. (By 1994, Charles and Diana had been separated for two years; they finalized their divorce in 1996.)

Of the current estrangement between Diana’s sons Prince William and Prince Harry—which has persisted for years—Carter said that Diana would, perhaps not surprisingly, not be happy with the family feud, and that she wouldn’t be happy with Harry’s rift with the rest of the royal family, either.

“I would think she would feel great sorrow for her son to have been pulled away from his family like this, especially his brother but also his father,” Carter said, calling the tumult “horrible for a family.”
