Everyone enjoys eating rice, but sometimes even your favourite food can pose health risks. Rice is a staple in daily meals, but reheating it improperly can be dangerous. If rice is stored or heated incorrectly, harmful bacteria can develop, which may affect your health.
According to dietitian Dimple Jangra, rice contains Bacillus Cereus bacteria, which can multiply if left at room temperature for too long. When reheated, these bacteria are not destroyed but instead release toxic substances.
Storing rice in the refrigerator for too long also allow bacteria to produce aflatoxins, which are harmful to the liver.
Precautions For Reheating Rice
Improper storage and reheating of rice can increase the risk of food poisoning, which may lead to symptoms such as stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or nausea. In some cases, the toxins produced by bacteria can also damage the liver and kidneys.
To ensure a safe meal, it is important to eat freshly cooked rice. If you need to store it, cool it quickly in a bowl of cold water, place it in the refrigerator within an hour, and reheat it thoroughly to a temperature of 165°F (75°C).
Always ensure that rice is reheated thoroughly, as lightly heated rice does not eliminate bacteria, increasing the risk of infection. If you store cooked rice, it should be consumed within 24-48 hours and kept in an airtight container at a temperature below 4°C to minimise bacterial growth.
