Stock Market Today: Indian benchmark equity indices, the BSE Sensex and Nifty50, took a nosedive at the market open on Monday, mirroring sharp declines in global markets amid fears of an escalating global trade war sparked by US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.
At the opening bell, the BSE Sensex plunged by 3,379.19 points, or 4.48%, to 71,985.50, while the Nifty50 dropped 901.05 points, or 3.93%, to 22,003.40.
All sectors were traded in red amid the Indian stock market crash.
Nifty Metal
The Nifty Metal index led the downturn with a sharp drop of approximately 7.44%, reflecting investor concerns over the impact of new tariffs on the metal industry.
Among the top losers were LLoyds Metals And Energy Limited (-12.80%), National Aluminium (-10%), Tata Steel (-9.20%), JSW Steel (-9.20%), and Hind Copper (-8.96%).
Nifty IT
The Nifty IT sector tumbled by 7% during the intraday. At noon, the index was trading at 31,955. Top losers in the index included Coforge and Mphasis, which fell by nearly 7% and 5.75%, respectively.
Nifty Auto
Another sector hit hard was Nifty Auto, which declined by 4.56% to trade at 19,654, having opened at 19,336 on Monday. The biggest losers in the Auto index were Tata Motors (-9%), Bharat Forge (-8.67%), Motherson Sumi (-6%), and Baja Auto (-5.39%).
Nifty PSU Bank
Nifty PSU Bank dropped 3.76% to trade at 6,031 after opening at 5,905.
Nifty FMCG
The Nifty FMCG index fell by 2.00% to trade at 52,746, opening at 51,201 compared to the previous day’s close of 53,
Among the top losers were Varun Beverages (-4.61%), Patanjali (-4.59%), Tata Consumer (-4.35%), and Radico Khaitan (-4.24%).
Nifty Pharma
Nifty Pharma also took a hit, dropping 2.69%. By noon, it was trading at 20,007, having opened at 19,122 on Monday, against the previous day’s close of 20,560. Top losers in the Nifty Pharma are Biocon (-8.21), IPCALAB (-6.96%), and Granules India Limited (-5.71%).
