Summer has arrived, and with it comes the need to switch on the air conditioning. While fans may have sufficed in the milder months, April usually sees most households relying on their AC units. However, after sitting idle for 7-8 months, these units require thorough cleaning before use. Dust, dirt, and even pests can accumulate in the system, potentially causing blockages, damage, and reduced efficiency.
Before turning on your AC, it’s crucial to have it serviced by a qualified technician, especially if it’s still under warranty. For older units or those no longer covered, professional servicing is still recommended. But if you’re on a budget and your AC is relatively new, there are ways to service it yourself.
DIY Air Conditioner Cleaning
Servicing an air conditioner can be costly, but if your unit is new and the warranty has expired, cleaning it yourself is a viable option.
For split AC units:
- Start with safety: Disconnect the power supply to your AC unit
- Clean the air filter: Open the front panel and locate the mesh-like air filter. This component traps most of the dust and dirt. Remove it and rinse it thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Allow it to dry completely in the sun before reinstalling it. Regular cleaning every 15 days ensures optimal cooling and prevents dust build-up
- Brighten the exterior: Over time, the white plastic of your AC unit can turn yellow. To restore its appearance, use a mild cleaner like Colin or a mixture of vinegar and water. Regularly wiping it down with a cloth dipped in detergent water can also help maintain its colour
- Tackle the outdoor unit: The outdoor unit, often located on a balcony, bears the brunt of dirt and debris. Carefully remove the grill and use a vacuum cleaner or a brush to clean the condenser fan. Avoid using water to clean this part.
General Cleaning Tips
- Wipe down the entire AC unit, both indoor and outdoor, with a clean, dry cloth.
- Use a brush to reach crevices and corners.
- Regular cleaning is key to maintaining your AC’s performance and extending its lifespan.
