SNL’s Kenan Thompson Spills on the Messiest Cast Member—and It’s Not Who You Think!
Kenan Thompson might not be the first person you think of when you think of Cascade dishwasher pods. But the longest-running Saturday Night Live cast member is actually pretty passionate about them, about cleaning, and anything that makes his life more convenient in that regard.
So it was even more surprising to hear his take on the messiest SNL cast member.
“You would think it would be Sarah [Sherman] because she likes mess so much, but her room is actually very put together and organized,” Thompson tells The Spruce.
“It might be me.”
Even so, Thompson is partnering with Cascade for the release of their newly-updated dishwasher pod formula. He grew up using Cascade and is impressed by how easy their products make doing the dishes.
“It’s nice to be a part of something pushing the future forward as far as convenience is concerned,” he says. “We’re getting pretty good at making life easy to entertain and not be stressed about it.”
We chatted with Thompson about his favorite cleaning tricks, his least favorite chore, and why he tackles all the dishes at the end of the day.
Why He Prefers to Tackle Dishes at the End of the Day
Some people prefer to clean up their dishes throughout the day to keep the kitchen tidy. But for Thompson, there’s a certain satisfaction that comes with doing it all at the end of the day.
He says cleaning as he cooks doesn’t feel like he has accomplished as much, but seeing everything piled up feels like more work—and therefore, more reward when it’s finished.
“Then it’s like, now that actually feels good,” he says.
The fact that Cascade makes doing dishes easier is likely part of it, including with their latest formula.
“This new formula is no rinsing, no thing—you just get clean dishes,” he says, adding that there’s a convenience that comes with knowing no matter what you cook, the dishes will come out clean.
“Not having to worry about that, it just makes the world your oyster,” Thompson says.

The Natural Cleaner Thompson Swears By
Aside from Cascade for his dishes, there’s a natural cleaning solution Thompson swear by for almost anything: vinegar and baking soda.
“[It] cleans out all kinds of sinks and gutters and any kind of pipeage,” he says, adding he likes to wash it down with lemon juice to make it smell even fresher.
Thompson says he uses vinegar and baking soda for cleaning the washing machine, the dishwasher, and even the bathroom.
“Those are two good combinations of the periodic table of elements that just comes in handy.”
Why Folding Laundry Is Thompson’s Least Favorite Chore
Thompson doesn’t seem to mind doing dishes or stacking the dishwasher, but like so many of us, there is one chore that is his least favorite: folding laundry.
He says even though he enjoys having clean laundry, being faced with a pile of clothes to fold at the end of it all never gets easier.
“That is just a pile of chaos,” he says.
How to Encourage Kids to Help With Chores
As a father of two, Thompson has a few ideas for encouraging kids to help with cleaning and tidying around the house.
“Using the word ‘chore’ is probably never helpful,” he suggests.
But beyond that, Thompson says it’s about repetition and showing them the importance of having these life skills—but that they might not appreciate it until much later.
“The repetition of it comes in handy later on in life, when they realize subconsciously that it just feels better to come back to a made bed,” Thompson says.
