Sources: Falcons to keep Cousins past deadline
The Atlanta Falcons will officially be keeping QB Kirk Cousins on their roster past 4 p.m. on Saturday, triggering a guarantee on a $10 million roster bonus that is due in 2026, sources told ESPN’s Field Yates and Adam Schefter.
Cousins, who was benched with just three games left last season in favor of Michael Penix Jr., has been the topic of trade speculation. With Atlanta’s decision official, it removes any need for the Falcons to rush any decision on Cousins’ future, be it staying on the team, being traded or an eventual release.
Cousins was benched after a stretch with nine interceptions and just one touchdown pass over five games.
Cousins tore his right Achilles in Week 8 of the 2023 season. He said the Achilles healed well, but his right ankle also never felt right in 2024.
Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million contract with Atlanta last offseason with $90 million guaranteed.
