Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is a four-time NBA champion. But while he might be best known for sinking impossible threes, he’s starting to become a bit of a nutrition champ in his spare time.
Fittingly nicknamed “Chef Curry,” the star recently partnered with PLEZi and entered the food space with his own sports drink line, PLEZi Hydration. With no-added-sugar and natural fruity flavors in each bottle, the beverages are promising a healthier-for-you option when compared to its competitors. For the launch, we got the chance to talk to Curry about the importance of hydration on and off the court.
And in this exclusive interview, Curry told EatingWell about his go-to game day foods, including the high-protein breakfast he loves. Plus, the basketball icon shares his favorite off day meals and more on his new drink line.
Do you have any go-to meals or snacks that help keep you fueled on game day?
I eat pretty much the same breakfast every time on game day. It’s some type of egg, an omelet or a scramble, something with some breakfast meats in there and some spinach. I eat a bowl of yogurt, granola and some mixed berries. I have a little protein smoothie and then if I’m feeling adventurous, I might have a half of a waffle or something just to get a little carb load going. The actual pregame meal can vary. It’s some type of protein, whether it’s fish or chicken, with a veggie and pasta or rice, pretty straightforward.
Favorite dishes on an off day?
There’s nothing better than Ayesha’s chicken parmigiana or her Spanish-rub chicken with parsley-mint sauce. The best comfort food to have on an off day at home with the family.
How do you prioritize hydration in your routine? How has developing a drink helped with that?
Staying hydrated is a top priority for me—both on and off the court. When I teamed up with PLEZi to create PLEZi Hydration, I knew success would come down to two things: packing it with the right nutrients and making it taste so good that people wouldn’t even realize it’s good for them. We didn’t just want a better sports drink—we wanted to redefine what hydration should be.
Let’s talk more about PLEZi Hydration: why develop a sports drink line, and what was your favorite part about helping create the line?
We wanted to bring a mindful and health-centric approach to what the younger generation put into their bodies. PLEZi Hydration is built differently—twice the electrolytes, half the sugar of the leading regular sports drink and none of the artificial sweeteners or unnecessary junk.
When I set out to create a sports drink, I wasn’t just thinking about what I needed—I wanted to make a lasting impact and give kids and families an option for nutritious products that also taste great. The most exciting part of PLEZi Hydration is knowing it’s fueling the next generation with the right ingredients, real benefits and unbeatable flavor.
PLEZi Nutrition.
If you had to choose a favorite flavor from the line, what would you pick?
My favorite flavor is Orange Mango Twist. Its fruity, natural flavors come through really nicely and reminds me of flavors I loved drinking in my childhood.
What does “eating well” mean to you?
For me, eating well is combined with maximizing sleep and understanding nutrition. Habits matter, the timing of what you eat, when you eat, how you eat all plays a role in “eating well.”
