The 7 Sunglasses Trends That Will Dominate in 2025

Though fashion’s innovations have jumped lightyears ahead—spray-on dresses, ice handbags, fruit leather!—there’s one facet of the business that has, for the most part, remained stagnant. Eyewear today is more functional than it’s ever been, but aesthetically, the optical style has done little to evolve past the standard cat-eye tortoiseshell sunglasses. But 2025 is showing some promise.

The eyewear industry is not only catching up; it’s surpassing other sectors, effectively living in the year 2035 (underwire, it’s time to step up your game). The newest sunglasses trends are more innovative, forward-thinking, and elaborate than ever before. Thanks to several daring designers, sunglasses will no longer be viewed as mere ocular protection—on the contrary, these frames were designed for opulence.

Frame-makers across brands are embracing the campy and flamboyant. This year’s collections feature every manner of the outrageous, from chromatic and crystal-embellished, to futuristic floating lenses and even pierced styles.

Judging by the runways and street style, sunglasses are clearly having their main character moment. These are the biggest 2025 trends that will bring a bit of glamour to your eyewear rotation.

In Coach’s fall/winter 2025 show, the brand merchandised nearly every look with a pair of funky statement shades. Iterations ranged from neon yellow to cobalt blue, but the label’s color of choice was resoundingly red. Pair after pair sauntered down the runway and directly onto the shelves of every competitor. Now, the color is omnipresent in sunglasses collections and runways alike.

Since its very first season, HBO’s White Lotus has by and large been considered a fashion show (Portia’s Season 2 outfits practically set the internet on fire). This season, however, has been fairly low-key, stylistically—in fact, the only noteworthy moment, thus far, was a single pair of leopard print sunglasses. Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) has worn the same spotted pair in nearly every episode of Season 3, inspiring many—including myself—to theorize about their origins. Her’s are from the luxury brand Jacquemus and are actually shoppable now. But other animal print styles can be found everywhere from Betsey Johnson to Celine.

When Swarovski released their spring/summer 2024 collection last July, it set off a chain event that will undoubtedly be felt—and seen—for years to come. The brand launched a line of embellished eyewear, influencing other sunglasses-makers to release their own sparkling sunnies. Gucci included glitzy shades in their cruise 2025 drop, while Gentle Monster launched—and subsequently sold out—their jewelry collection in January. An indicator of trends to come, shoppers will be surely seeing even more embellished styles before the year is over.

Silver has been fashion’s metal of choice for a while now. And after years of near-ubiquitousness, sunglasses have finally caught up. Jenny Bird, Ray-Ban, Prada, and more have joined the metallic movement, highlighting silvery sheens with their lenses, as well as frames. Of course, the classic gold-rimmed aviator will never go out of style, but its cool-toned counterpart has officially joined the ranks.

With A-list fans, like Jennifer Lopez (who literally refuses to wear anything else), it seems inevitable that vintage-inspired, jumbo frames would become one of 2025’s top sunglasses trends. Square-shaped specs have been popularized, both in prescription lenses, as well as sun-blockers—and the bigger, the better. Massive lenses are made even more so with the addition of chunky resin frames and electrifying hues.

Fashion historians will remember 2025 as the year poor eyesight became cool. Thanks to winter’s corpcore craze, ’00s-era wireless glasses have begun trending in the corrective lens space. As a result, sunglasses too, have seen their once-chunky frames evaporate entirely. Darkened lenses are now being held up by nothing more than thin temples and transparent nose pads. They’re the sleek and subtle antidote to the year’s more bombastic sunglasses trends.

Shield-Style

Shield-style sunnies are nothing new—in fact, they’ve been the leading trend for the last year or so. Still, the style continues gaining traction, with celebrity endorsers like Kylie Jenner, Julia Fox, and, most prominently, Rihanna, who never misses an occasion to sport her favorites. Instead of waning in popularity, these beauties will only tighten their grip on the fashion set in the months ahead. New evolutions will hit shelves, as well, like bug-style bubble glasses and two-tone.
